In the orient it is interpreted as the creation of the world and the beginning of human history, Therefore it is the pattern played by the beginner. The pattern has 2 halves, one to represent the heavens and the other to represent the Earth. Tul This is a series of Blocks and attacks, set in a logical sequence against one or more imaginary opponents There are 24 patterns in TKD, one for each hour of the day Meaning of Yellow Yellow signifies the Earth, in which the plant sprouts and takes root, as the Tae Kwon-Do foundations are being laid. Chon Ji Tips…! Remember when you block to the right, you move 180 degrees… as opposed to when you block to the left you only move 90 degrees. Meaning of Yul Gok - 38 Movements Yul Gok is the pseudonym (penname) of a great Philosopher and Scholar Yi I (1536 – 1584 A.D) – nicknamed the confusious of Korea. The 38 movements refer to his birthplace on the 38th Degree latitude. The Pattern diagram represents the Scholar. Revision of previous Kups Go back over all your previous Pattern Meanings, make sure you are happy with them all and can remember them from memory. Do the same for all your previous Belt Colours!! Yul Gok Tips..! The first two punches in Yul Gok are in quick motion. We still need to see you doing two single punches, but with a smaller gap in between than usual. The Front kick is low section, side kicks are middle. The new move of Twin Knifehand has the same start position as Twin Outer Forearm Block, (palms facing, and the hand that is closest to your body depends on which leg is moving!!! The 32 movements refer to Mr Ahn’s age when he was executed in Lui Shung prison in 1910. Meaning of Red Belt Red signifies danger. Meaning of Toi Gye – 37 Movements Toi Gye is the pseudonym (penname) of the Scholar Yi Hwang (16th Century A.D) – who was an authority in Neo Confucianism. The 37 movement represent his birthplace on the 37th Degree latitude Don’t Forget the Meaning of Red Belt Red signifies danger. Cautioning the student to exercise control, and warning the opponent to stay away Joong Gun & Toi Gye Tips..! Joong Gun is a pattern filled with different stances, there are very few consecutive stances that are the same. Also remember that we do more moves going backwards to our starting spot, make sure you slightly shorten your stances to make sure you don’t miss your start position!! With Toi Gye, again there are a lot of stance changes, make sure that All San Makgi’s are done in Sitting Stance (Annun Sogi)! The 29 movements refer to the 29th Infantry Division, which is where Tae Kwon-Do developed into maturity Meaning of Black Belt Black being the opposite of white. Therefore signifying maturity and proficiency in Tae Kwon-Do. It also indicates the wearers imperviousness to darkness and fear. Hwarang Tips..! Remember the High Section Turning Kicks are executed at a small degree to the target. Middle Section Turning Kicks are done at 45 degrees, High Section kicks are between towards degrees. 13 Choong Moo Tips..! Revision of All Previous Kups
Breakdown Choong Moo (plus all previous patterns) Sparring, 2 vs 1 & 1 Step Destruction (see Table) Revise all previous Theory Meaning of Choong Moo – 30 Movements Choong Moo was the given name to the Great Admiral Yi Sun of the Yi Dynasty. He was reputed to have invented the first armoured battleship – The Kobutson, which was said to be the pre-curser to the modern day Submarine in 1592 A.D The Reason the pattern finishes with a left handed punch is to symbolise his regrettable death, having no chance to display his unrestrained potential. Which was checked by the forced reservation of his loyalty to the King. Choong Moo Tips..! The Flying Side Kick in Choong Moo is done with a cycle motion, this requires the left knee to be raised whilst in the air, similar to a Front Kick start position. Then make sure you completely extend the right leg while executing the Side Kick. The 360 Spinning Knifehand is all about the tuck in the jump to ensure a solid landing!! Age (defines which board you break) Kup (Defines what technique you use) Under 10 – Blue Under 13 – Red Under 17 – Padded Black Over White Board 10th Kup – Palm 9th Kup – Side Elbow 8th Kup – Side Kick (strongest leg) 7th Kup – Side Kick (Both legs) 6th Kup- Back Kick 5th Kup – Turning Kick 4th Kup – Side Kick (one board up) 3rd Kup- Reverse Turning Kick 2nd Kup- Jumping Side Kick from Junbi 1st Kup – Jumping Back Kick or Examiners choice So for example a 5th Kup who is 16, will break a padded black board using a Turning Kick…. But a 9 year old 4th Kup will break using a side kick using a red board as they will break the next board up.

18 Meaning of Kwang Gae –39 Movements
Kwang – Gae is named after the famous King Kwang Gae Toh Wang, the 19th King of the Koguryo Dynasty. Who regained all the lost territories, including the greater part of Manchuria. The pattern diagram represents the expansion and recovery of lost territory. The 39 movements refer to the first two figures of the year 391 A.D, the year the King came to the throne. Meaning of Pe-Eun – 36 Movements Po-Eun is the pseudonym of a loyal subject Chong Mong-Chu (1400) who was s famous poet and whose poem “I would not serve a second Master, though I might be crucified a thousand times” is known to every Korean. He was also a pioneer in the field of Physics. The diagram represents his unerring loyalty to the King and Country towards to end of the Koguryo Dynasty. Eui-Am is the pseudonym of Son Byong Hi, Leader of the Korean independence movement on 1st March The 45 movements refer to his age when he changed the name of Dong Hak (Oriental Culture) to Chondo Kyo (Heavenly Way Religion) in The Diagram represents his Indomitable Spirit, displayed while dedicating himself to the prosperity of his nation. Meaning of Choong-Jang – 52 Movements Choong-Jang is the pseudonym given to General Kim Duk Ryang who lived during the Lee Dynasty in the 14th Century. This pattern ends with a left hand attack symbolize the tragedy of his death at 27 in prison before he was able to reach full maturity. Meaning of Juche – 45 Movements Juche is a philosophical idea that man is the master of everything and decides everything. In other words the idea that man is master of the world and his destiny.
