1 Phase Changes

2 Review: 3 Phases of Matter
Match the vocabulary word with the correct picture. Gas Liquid Solid

3 What is a Phase Change? Phase change is a change from one state of matter to another. Phase changes are physical changes because they only affects physical appearance, not chemical make-up, so they can be reversed.

4 What happens during a phase change?
During a phase change, heat energy is either absorbed or released. Heat energy is released as molecules slow down and move closer together. Heat energy is absorbed as molecules speed up and expand.

5 Types of Phase Changes Write the name of each type of phase change on the correct arrow. Use the following slides to help.

6 Types of Phase Changes The arrows on this picture are all red. This is not correct. Color code the arrows on your page. Red for increasing temperature and blue for decreasing temperature.

7 Melting A change in state of matter from a solid to a liquid.
Increasing Temperature Atoms Movement = Molecules speed up, move farther apart, and absorb heat energy.

8 Freezing A change in state of matter from a liquid to a solid
Decreasing Temperature Atoms Movement= Molecule slow down, move closer together and release heat energy.

9 Vaporization (Boiling)
A change in state of matter from a liquid to gas. It occurs at the substance's boiling point. Increasing Temperature Molecules speed up, move farther apart, and absorb heat energy. The most boring video ever - boiling water

10 Evaporation A change in state of matter from a liquid to a gas on the surface of a liquid. Increasing Temperature Atoms Movement= Molecules speed up, move farther apart, and absorb heat energy.

11 Condensation A change in state of matter from a gas to a liquid.
Decreasing Temperature Atoms Movement= Molecule slow down, move closer together and release heat energy.

12 Sublimation & Deposition Video
A change in state of matter from a solid to a gas. Increasing Temperature Atoms Movement= Molecules speed up, move farther apart, and absorb heat energy. Sublimation & Deposition Video

13 Deposition A change in state of matter from a gas to a solid.
Decreasing Temperature Atoms movement= Molecules slow down, move closer together and release heat energy.

14 What happens to the temperature during phase change?
In your NB describe what happens to the temperature of water as it is changing from a solid to a liquid.

15 Summarizer Why is there no change in temperature during a phase change? Define melting and freezing points. What is the boiling point and freezing point of water? At what temperature does water freeze and become a solid?

17 Activity- Changes between Solid, Liquid, and Gas states.
Research liquid nitrogen, liquid Helium, and liquid hydrogen. the properties of each substance, including its boiling and freezing point. Find out how these elements are used in advanced technological applications, such as storing biological samples or cooling computers. Create a brochure, poster, or a ppt presentation to summarize your findings.
