1 Heating and Cooling Curves
Goal: the goal of this video is to be able to describe the three phases of matter and phase changes through a heating/cooling curve

2 What are some things that happen as we heat a sample up?
Solid  Liquid  Gas Melting, boiling

3 What is the heating curve?
The heating curve is a graph which represents how a sample changes phases. As heat is added over time, the sample changes temperature and phase accordingly. Thus heating curve. Temperature °C HEAT 

4 Changes of state – heating curve
gas boiling liquid  gas temperature liquid melting solid  liquid solid time

5 Changes of state – cooling curve
temperature time gas condensing gas liquid liquid freezing liquid  solid solid

6 Evaporation vs. Boiling
Boiling is a phase change of a WHOLE substance from liquid to gas Evaporation is a molecule on the surface escaping mainly during the liquid phase

7 The heating and cooling curves are show changes in temperature and energy. They give us detailed information about phases and phase changes of samples. NOW YOU KNOW…
