2 Romans 11:36 (ESV) 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

3 Sex and Sexual Desire is . . .
Created by God (Col 1:16) Continues to exist by the will of Christ (Col 1:17) Caused by God (Eph 1:11) Subject to Christ (Eph 1:22) Making sex new (Rev 21:5) Good (1 Tim 4:4) Lawful in the context of marriage (1 Cor 10:23)

4 Sex and Sexual Desire is . . .
For the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31) Works together for the good of God’s children (Romans 8:28) We are to thank God for Sex (1 Tim 4:4) To be sanctified by the Word of God and prayer (1 Tim 4:4-5) We must be on guard not to be enslaved by Sex (1 Cor 6:12) We are not to grumble about sex (Phil 2:14)

5 Sex and Sexual Desire is . . .
We are to rejoice in the Lord during sex (Phil 4:4) We are to be content in sex (2 Cor 9:8) Spouses are not to deprive one another sexually (1 Cor 7:5) Both pure and impure (Titus 1:15)

6 God’s Purpose for Sex. . . A means of Procreation A means of Communication (Intimacy) A means of recreation A means of Invocation

7 Avarice Gluttony Anger Sloth Vainglory Lust Envy Pride

8 “Pride is ruthless, sleepless unsmiling concentration of self.”
—C.S. Lewis

9 Envy is the hatred of someone else’s borrow glory.

10 Vainglory is the attempt to steal all glory including God’s.

11 Sloth is the avoidance of Love.

12 Avarice is excessive love for money and possessions.

13 Our Anger is expression of disordered love.

14 Gluttony is excessive focus on your own pleasure.

15 Lust is sexual desire that dishonors its object and disregards God.

16 1 Thessalonians 4:3 (ESV) 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;

17 Ephesians 5:23–28 (ESV) 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

18 1 Thessalonians 4:4–5 (ESV)
4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;

19 1 Thessalonians 4:4–5 (ESV)
4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 1 Thessalonians 4:4 (RSV) 4 that each one of you know how to take a wife for himself in holiness and honor,

20 1 Peter 3:7 (ESV) 7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

21 1 Corinthians 7:2 (ESV) 2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.

22 Lust is sexual desire when knowledge and intimacy with God is removed.
Lust is sexual desire when honor and holiness of the other person is removed. Lust is sexual desire when knowledge and intimacy with God is removed.

23 —Frederick Buechner Wishful Thinking
“Adultery, promiscuity either heterosexual or homosexual, masturbation—one appealing view is that anything goes as long as no one gets hurt. The trouble is that human beings are so hopelessly psychosomatic in composition that whatever happens to the soma [body] happens to the psyche [soul] and vice versa.” —Frederick Buechner Wishful Thinking

24 “At its roots the hunger to know someone sexually is the hunger to know and be known by that person humanly. Food without nourishment doesn’t fill the bill for long, and neither does sex without humanness.” —Frederick Buechner Wishful Thinking

25 “How do we think of our bodies and the bodies of others
“How do we think of our bodies and the bodies of others? Paul writes that they are “a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God” (1 Cor. 6:19). Are they sacred spaces or a place for cheap thrills? The lustful person’s distorted desire for pleasure leads her to treat both herself and others with less value and respect than she ought. Lust is as irreverent about bodies and sex as it is obsessed with them. The body is a pleasure-delivery device, to be used at will. But the Christian view of the body is that it is a place where God dwells, an image of the living God. To degrade each other sexually is to participate in the ‘degradation of a king [or queen].” —Rebecca Konydyk-DeYoung “Glittering Vices”

26 Lust is sexual desire when knowledge and intimacy with God is removed.
Lust is sexual desire when honor and holiness of the other person is removed. Lust is sexual desire when knowledge and intimacy with God is removed.

27 Solution to our Lust is not our Chastity.

28 Solution to our Lust is the Church.

29 Hebrews 10:24–25 (ESV) 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

30 Colossians 1:28 (ESV) 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

31 Ephesians 5:25 (ESV) 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,

32 Take your Lust seriously Take all your Vices seriously

33 1 Thessalonians 4:6–8 (ESV)
6 that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. 7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. 8 Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

34 Works = Justification (NO) Faith + Works = Justification (NO)
Faith = Justification – WORKS (NO) Faith = Justification + WORKS (YES)

35 “Justifying faith is lust-fighting faith.”
—John Piper

36 Saving Faith is Sin-Fighting Faith

37 Matthew 5:27–30 (ESV) 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
