3 Repetition The repeated use of a word or phrase. For example, Elizabeth I repeats the phrase “I myself” to emphasize her personal involvement in England’s defense.

4 Rhetorical question A question to which no answer is expected. (Who is more eager for revolution than he who is discontented with his present state of life?)

5 Ethos Ethos (Credibility), or ethical appeal, means convincing by the character of the author. We tend to believe people whom we respect. One of the central problems of argumentation is to project an impression to the reader that you are someone worth listening to . The author /creator must be viewed as an authority on the subject of the paper, as well as someone who is likable and worthy of respect As you look for examples of ethos consider the following: Does it make you look at things from a “right or wrong” perspective? Does it challenge your , political, national moral or religious beliefs?

6 LOGOS Logos (Logical) means persuading by the use of reasoning.
Aristotle's favorite rhetorical tool Appeals to a person’s notion of “what makes sense” As you look for examples of “logos” consider the following: Does it make you “think”? Does it utilizes statistics? Facts? Authorities? Does it take a scientific or straightforward approach?

7 PATHOS Pathos (Emotional) means persuading by appealing to the reader's emotions. Language /Image choice affects the audience's emotional response, and emotional appeal can effectively be used to enhance an argument. As you look for examples of “pathos” consider the following: Does it make you FEEL something about what is presented? Does it tug at your heart strings?
