13 The Conjugation of a Verb
Recall that all verbs belong to a conjugation, or a family of verbs that follow similar patterns declension : noun :: conjugation : verb Like a noun’s declension, a verb’s conjugation is fixed and cannot change There are FOUR conjugations (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th) We have only seen 1st so far

14 Identifying a Verb’s Conjugation
To identify a verb’s conjugation, look at the vowel immediately before the –re in the 2nd PP 1st Conjugation Verbs: identified by –Ā– before the –re in the 2nd PP exceptions: dō, dare; stō, stare 2nd Conjugation Verbs: identified by –Ē– before the –re in the 2nd PP

15 2nd Conjugation Morphology
The 2nd conjugation follows the same exact rules as the 1st conjugation when generating forms Indicative Mood, Active Voice Forms: PRES. = pres. stem + ō, s, t, mus, tis, nt IMPF. = pres. stem + bam, bās, bat, bāmus, bātis, bant FUT. = pres. stem + bo, bis, bit, bimus, bitis, bunt PERF. = perf. stem + ī, istī, it, imus, istis, ērunt PLUPF. = perf. stem + eram, erās, erat, erāmus, erātis, erant FUT. PF. = perf. stem + erō, eris, erit, erimus, eritis, erint

The 2nd conjugation follows the same exact rules as the 1st conjugation when generating forms Imperative Mood, Active Voice, Present Tense: 2nd SG = pres. stem 2nd PL = pres. stem + te
