6

7 Mercantilism Mother countries control trade to create a “favorable” balance You MUST export more than you import. Nations build wealth (gold, silver) Wealth is power

8 What role did mercantilism play with the colonies?
European powers tried to colonize lands that were rich in gold, silver, and raw materials that they couldn’t get at home. A powerful nation wanted to buy raw materials from its own colonies. Colonies were forced to import (buy) the goods of the Mother Country, and the colonists were heavily taxed.

9 How did colonies feel about it?
Mercantilism was insulting! Colonies felt they were being milked like cows…

10 DA RULEZ of Mercantilism
Gain as much gold and silver as possible. Export more than you import. Tax items… it decreases your import cost! (How?) Settle as many colonies as you can! Allow colonies to trade with the mother country only. Don’t let the colonies make their own finished goods.

11 Mercantilism… RAP! CIRCLE lyrics that would make a good definition of MERCANTILISM. HIGHLIGHT or UNDERLINE supporting details for those lyrics.

12 Create a graphic that best represents the idea of mercantilism TO YOU.

Gain as much _____ and _____ as possible. ______ more than you ______. _______ items… it decreases your import cost! (How?) Settle as many ________as you can! Allow colonies to trade with _____only. Don’t let the colonies make their own ____________.

16 Holy Mercantilism! How to Win:
Your group = your country. Elect a “countryman” to be your first colonizer. Once we get outside, his/her job is to find a paper bag and bring it to home base. Then, “countryman” 2 repeats the process (think relay). The quicker you go and the more bags you collect, the better for your country! The goal is to win. You have better chances of winning if you have more stuff! No stealing! You will only have 10 minutes!

17 Inventory Your Goodies!
Count your bags Tally your total wealth Any negatives?

18 # of Bags Total Wealth Negatives Netherlands Portugal Spain England France

19 With your group, add up your “wealth.” Then decide, IN REAL LIFE:
What just happened?! With your group, add up your “wealth.” Then decide, IN REAL LIFE: What could cause a country to “win”? What could cause a country to “lose”? Are there any benefits for the colonies? What are 3 principles of mercantilism that you used today?

20 In your own words, describe 2 basic principles of mercantilism.
