Exploration and Expansion Section 3 Mercantilism Game Objective: You have 12 minutes to conquer as much land/people and gold as possible. Your expedition will face a series of obstacles. Once your team has completed an obstacle, see me for your gold! Then place your flag on the map location that your team chose to conquer and claim.

Exploration and Expansion Section 3 Debrief of Activity What do the countries represent? What real obstacles did those groups face? Why place flags upon the map? Why only 12 minutes? What does the gold represent? Why were you not all from the same country? Why was it a competition? Why couldn’t each team get gold for the same thing?

Exploration and Expansion Section 3 Main Idea Countries tried to gain wealth by controlling trade and establishing colonies. Mercantilism Nation’s strength depended on its wealth Wealthy nation had power for military and expanded influence New Economic Policy Wealth measured by amount of gold & silver a nation had For one nation to become more powerful, it had to take wealth away from another nation Led to intense competition Intense Competition

Exploration and Expansion Section 3 Mercantilists built wealth two ways: Get gold and silver from mines Sell more goods than you buy (export more than you import) PROFIT$$$ PROFIT$$$ PROFIT$$$ They wanted to reduce the amount of imports by placing tariffs on goods Tariff = tax on imports Importer paid tariff, added cost to price of good Imported goods became more expensive = people stopped importing Imports = BAD Manufactured goods sold for more money than raw materials Countries encouraged manufacturing and the export of those manufactured goods Governments provided loans to help start new businesses Exports = GOOD

Exploration and Expansion Section 3 Building colonies was essential to mercantilism European powers wanted to establish colonies –Could control sources of raw materials –To provide new markets for manufactured goods Colonies existed only to benefit home country Colonies Monarchs restricted economic activities in colonies: Colonists could not sell raw materials to other countries Could not buy manufactured goods from other nations Forced to buy only from home country Strict Laws in Colonies
