75 “The Roots of Baptism”

76

77 What are the roots of baptism?

78 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring you to God, after being put to death in the fleshly realm but made alive in the spiritual realm. 1 Peter 3:18

79  In that state He also went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison who in the past were disobedient, 1 Peter 3:19,20

80  when God patiently waited in the days of Noah while an ark was being prepared. In it a few—that is, eight people—were saved through water. 1 Peter 3:20

81  Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 3:21

82 A root of baptism is found in the story of Noah.

83  Now I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 1 Corinthians 10:1,2

84  They all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:3,4

85  But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.
1 Corinthians 10:5

86 A root of baptism is found in the crossing of the Red Sea.

87 Washing Rituals in the Old Testament
Leviticus 11:32 Leviticus 14:8,9 Leviticus 15:5,6,7,8,10,11,13,16,18,21,22,27 Leviticus 16:4,24,26,28 Deuteronomy 23:11

88  For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow, sprinkling those who are defiled, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, Hebrews 9:13

89  how much more will the blood of the Messiah, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to serve the living God? Hebrews 9:14

90  Therefore, brothers, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way He has opened for us through the curtain (that is, His flesh), Hebrews 10:19,20

91  and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. Hebrews 10:21,22

92

93 A root of baptism is found in Old Testament ritual immersions.

94   He went into all the vicinity of the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, Luke 3:3

95   as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight! Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be made low; the crooked will become straight, the rough ways smooth, and everyone will see the salvation of God. Luke 3:4-6

96   He then said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Luke 3:7

97 Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance
Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t start saying to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones! Luke 3:8

98 Even now the ax is ready to strike the root of the trees
Even now the ax is ready to strike the root of the trees! Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” Luke 3:9

99  Now the people were waiting expectantly, and all of them were debating in their minds whether John might be the Messiah. Luke 3:15

100  John answered them all, “I baptize you with water, but One is coming who is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to untie the strap of His sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Luke 3:16

101  His winnowing shovel is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and gather the wheat into His barn, but the chaff He will burn up with a fire that never goes out.” Luke 3:17

102  Then, along with many other exhortations, he proclaimed good news to the people.
Luke 3:18

103 John’s baptism emphasized moral purity rather than ritual purity.

104 When all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. Luke 3:21

105   As He was praying, heaven opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a physical appearance like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are My beloved Son. I take delight in You! Luke 3:21,22

106 Through baptism, Jesus identifies himself with his followers.

107   “Repent,” Peter said to them, “and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38

108 Peter announces a new baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins in which the Holy Spirit will be received.

109 The roots of baptism run deep through the story of God’s people.

110 Through baptism, we enter the story of God’s people, receive forgiveness of sins and receive the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
