Key Question: Why are “systems” so important?
To be useful, data generally resides on a system where users can do something with it…. and these systems host the applications used to turn data into useful information
42
Relative impact to IT operations
The Problem… Malicious Attacks Viruses Worms Trojan Horses Phishing SpyWare Environmental Impacts Power Outages Floods Tornadoes Etc. Common Denominator: Loss of System and/or Equipment Relative impact to IT operations User Mishaps End User Error Theft Fat Finger Hardware/Software Hard Drive Motherboard/Power System Corruption Failed Patch or Update A common denominator of all these events is the loss of a system and or equipment. Soft Hard
43
Business Challenges… Complexity of system recovery
Time to recover system Maintaining duplicate hardware IT support in remote locations
44
What if You Could… Recover a Windows system...
In minutes - not hours or days? To completely different hardware? In a remote location? To a virtual environment? Reliably every time?

LiveState Recovery – How it Works
In the event of a disaster, the Recovery Environment is used to restore to an exact point in time. Volume Recovery Point agents are installed is installed on critical servers, desktops & laptops. 1 NAS / SAN Device 4 I/SCSI, SATA, ATA The entire system is then captured and stored in a single portable file, creating a unique time-stamped “recovery point”. 2 USB / Firewire The desired recovery point is chosen and the system returns to its original working state -- OS, applications, configuration information, etc. 5 Volume recovery points can be stored on virtually any disk-based storage device as well as Flash Memory & CD/DVD. Click To First Build So the way that it works is LiveState Recovery has an agent installed on the server or the system, whether it be a desktop or even a laptop that it's protecting Click To Next Build On that system the agent can be scheduled to run on a regular basis. It can capture full or complete backups of the entire system, which we call recovery points. And those recovery points capture everything on that system at that point in time. All of the applications, the operating system, settings, configurations, information, etc. In addition, LiveState Recovery can create incremental recovery points. Incrementals take less time to create as they only capture the changes that have occurred between the last incremental and the one that is currently running and they use up less storage space as well. Another element that makes it really simple to use is that LiveState Recovery is a disk-to-disk solution so it can store those recovery points on pretty much any disk-based media. For example, NAS or SAN volumes, whether it's iSCSI or SATA or ATA, even USB and FireWire drives direct attached to a laptop for example are used on a regular basis, CD and DVD media. Essentially any type of media that Windows can see, then it's going to be a viable destination. Then, the way that recovery is performed, is that the Symantec Recovery Disk that is bundled with the Product CD is ready to go right out of the box. The recovery disk already contains the drivers and the environment necessary for you to perform a Windows-based bare metal recovery. So if you have a system that goes down, you boot using the Recovery CD and it will actually load the drivers that are necessary for recovery and auto detect hardware for that system. It allows you to load the network settings as well and already has the NIC drivers and everything ready to connect to whatever storage location you've saved those recovery points on. You simply select the recovery point you want to restore to and then perform the recovery. It's that simple. It can be boiled down to two or three steps total and reduces the recovery time that it took previously from hours and days to minutes. 3 Flash Memory CD/DVD

Revolutionary New Features in Version 6.0
Restore Anyware Option Restore a system to dissimilar hardware Conversion to virtual & back (P2V & V2P) LiveState Recovery Manager integration with Backup Exec LightsOut Restore Option Now, in Version 6, we've released some new and really ground-breaking features that no other image-based system recovery solution offers today. The first one that I want to touch on is the Restore Anyware option which allows you to restore systems to completely dissimilar hardware. I'll describe that to you in detail and give you a good idea on how that is going to benefit your organization. Next is another component of the Restore Anyware option which gives you the ability to convert system recovery points to virtual environments and back to physical environments again. Additionally, LiveState Recovery Manager has also been updated with significant enhancements and integration of Backup Exec that I'll describe And finally we have the LightsOut Restore option, enabling you to recover a system remotely without needing an administrator on site to perform that recovery.
52
LiveState Recovery -- Restore Anyware™ Option Restoring Volume Recovery Points to Dissimilar Hardware 1 A recovery point is taken with the Restore Anyware Option installed. Server 1 SCSI PCI Single Processor In the event of a failure, the recovery point can be restored to different hardware (new HAL, storage, network, etc.). 2 Recovery Point Store 3 The recovery disk contains the drivers needed to restore to a different system. Prompt is displayed if additional drivers are needed. Server 2 SATA PCIx Dual Processor 4 The system is restored to dissimilar hardware quickly, easily, and reliably.
53
Restore Anyware™ Option – Virtual Converting Volume Recovery Points to Virtual Environments and Back
1 The Restore Anyware Option enables conversion of physical to virtual systems and vice versa. Physical System In the event of hardware failure, system migration, or pre-install testing, a recovery point can be converted to a virtual environment. 2 Conversion Toolkit 3 In a virtual environment, the system can be tested or modified prior to re-deployment to a physical system. Virtual System 4 Convert the recovery point back to a physical state quickly and easily once ready for physical deployment.
54
LightsOut Restore Option Unattended Restoration for Remote Sites
1 Scheduled volume recovery points are captured and stored. HP iLO 2 The recovery environment is installed on the hard drive of each protected server. Dell DRAC II A remote server fails, requiring a rapid recovery. 3 HP Riloe II The server’s baseboard management controller is used to boot the server into the recovery environment. 4 The recovery environment is accessed via built-in pcAnywhere technology and used to perform a full system restore. 5

Management Platform Server and Database Recovery Point Storage
Symantec LiveState™ Recovery Manager Option Volume Recovery Point Manager & Integration with Backup Exec 1 LiveState Recovery Manager enables remote system recovery of disparate systems all from a central console.
