8 “The School Children” Read this poem on the first grade. This is a different perspective from “First Grade.” While reading, Annotate for the following: Words Choice (Diction) Imagery (5 Senses) Details (Facts, Info; Who, What, Where, Why, When, How?) --The graphic organizer attached is based on details.

9 So What? In small groups or pairs, answer the following. (Popsicle Sticks on the ready!) 1. What are some word choices you find interesting or compelling? What is their effect? 2. What images really speak to you? How is the speaker manipulating your MOOD? 3. What information does the speaker provide that you find interesting? Is there any information she OMITS? Why do you think this is?

10 HOMEWORK Answer the following prompt for both “First Grade” and “The School Children”: Both poems express ideas and arguments about education. In a short response, explain the speakers’ tones in each poem as they relate to education or school. You may wish to rely on diction, imagery, and/or details. To complete this, you must write TWO paragraphs (min) and at least ONE PAGE total. You should follow EESEC, and use direct evidence pieces of evidence per claim is AP-appropriate. DUE MONDAY.
