1 A Strategy for Reading and Writing
SOAPSTone A Strategy for Reading and Writing (The following presentation is based on information developed by the College Board)

2 The problem for student writers:
Many students do not have a plan that enables them to begin the process of organizing and developing their ideas. Without a strategy, they simply begin to write, and the quality of the composition is often erratic.

3 A solution: Students need to recognize that any good composition is carefully planned. They need a strategy to help them identify and use the central components of good writing. SOAPSTone is one such strategy that can help students organize and develop their writing assignments.

4 What is SOAPSTone? S = Speaker O = Occasion A = Audience P = Purpose S = Subject Tone = The attitude of the author

5 Speaker The voice that tells the story. Before an author begin to write, he must decide whose voice is going to be heard. Whether the voice belongs to a fictional character or the writer himself, the author must determine how to insert and develop those attributes of the speaker that will influence the perceived mean of the piece.

6 Occasion The time and place of the piece; the context that prompted the writing. Writing does not occur in a vacuum. All writers are influenced by the larger occasion: an environment of ideas, attitudes, and emotions that swirl around a broad issue. Then there is the immediate occasion; an event or situation that catches the writer’s attention and triggers a response.

7 Audience The group of readers to whom this piece is directed. As writers begin, they must determine who the audience is they intend to address. It may be one person or a specific group. This choice of audience will affect how and why a writer writes a particular text.

8 Purpose The reason behind the text. Writers need to consider the purpose of the text in order to develop the thesis or the argument and its logic. They need to ask themselves, “What do I want my audience to think or do as a result of reading my text?”

9 Subject A person or thing that is being discussed, described, or dealt with. Writers should be able to state the subject in a few words or phrases. This step helps them to focus on the intended task throughout the text. Similarly, a reader should also be able to state the subject in a few words or phrases.

10 Tone The attitude of the author.
The spoken word can covey the speaker’s attitude and thus helps to impart meaning through tone of voice. With the written word, it is tone that extends meaning beyond the literal. It should be conveyed through diction (choice of words), syntax (sentence construction), and imagery (metaphors, similes, and other types of figurative language.
