The Catholic Church

Structure The structure of the institution Catholic Church is like a governmental system. The whole world is divided into diocese (about 3,000) and each of those is divided into parishes. Each diocese has a bishop that oversees it

Structure Holy See is the term for the area under the religious jurisdiction of the bishop of Rome, who is the pope. The world is then further divided into diocese, which are under the jurisdiction of other bishops. Some of the diocese are larger, metropolitan or more politically important than others and they are called archdiocese and their bishops are called archbishops.

structure Within each diocese are smaller units, called parishes, and each parish is about the size of a medieval manor or a small town and has its own church. Each parish is overseen by a priest. Each parish is supposed to have a priest that oversees it- in absence of that there will be a deacon or a lay minister.

Cathedral Each diocese has a larger church called a cathedral. A cathedral is generally fancier and larger than a parish church. A cathedral should also have a holy relic. These are honored items that belonged to, are part of, or are associated with Jesus, Mary, the apostles or a saint.

Relics St Peter’s Basilica in Rome- his tomb is under the altar.
St. Peter's chains, preserved in San Pietro in Vincoli,

Relics Relic from the shrine of Saint Boniface of Dokkum in the hermit-church of Warfhuizen: bone fragment in middle is from Saint Boniface; little folded papers on the left and right contain bone fragments of Saint Benedict of Nursia and Bernard of Clairvaux

Relics This is the head of St. Catherine. It is in a reliquary in Siena, Italy Her miracles include healing people with the Plague, saving the souls of the hardest of criminals, healing people crushed by falling buildings, converting the worst people.

Relics This is Chartres Cathedral in France. It has a relic called the Sancta Camisa, the tunic worn by Mary during the birth of Christ.

Hierarchy All parishes are overseen by a priest,
all diocese are overseen by a priest who has been elevated to the status of a bishop, large/important diocese are overseen by an archbishop, usually a priest, who was a bishop and then elevated to the status of an archbishop, cardinals are bishops who have been elevated to a position where they are partially responsible for the larger stewardship of the Holy See overall. They still have responsibilities to their diocese. The college of cardinals is responsible for the election of Popes.

Hierarchy In the middle ages and well into the 16th century Church offices were being bought and sold and people who were not priests were being given titles in the Church. After the Catholic Reformation the Church began to seriously curtail all inappropriate actions like this, and now all bishops, cardinals and priests were priests and ordained. Giovanni de Medici, Cardinal of Pisa at 17.

Pope The Catholic Church sees the Pope as infallible, second only to G-d. He is the bishop of Rome, the leader of the Holy See, the political leader of the country of the Vatican. There have been 267 popes, almost all have been Italian. (196) The pope is elected by the College of Cardinals. (213)
