Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources Do you have used household batteries (A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, etc.) to dispose of? Don’t throw them in the trash. Place them in the container on the credenza in Becker Hall for safe disposal by the Green Team.

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. Look for the emblem when purchasing products or materials for your home.

Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources Why should I buy CFL light bulbs? They use 2/3 less energy to produce the same amount of light. They last 10 times longer. They generate 70% less heat.

Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources How much money can I save by switching from incandescent light bulbs to CFLs? Each CFL you use will save you $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb.

Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources If every household in the U.S. replaced just one regular incandescent light bulb with a CFL bulb, it would prevent 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, the equivalent of taking 7.5 million cars off the road!!! CFL

Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources When a CFL bulb burns out, can I throw it in with my regular trash? No! Lowe’s has a recycle container near customer service for safe recycling of CFLs.

Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources Why should I use LED lights where possible? LEDs last 60 times longer than incandescents and 10 times longer than CFLs. They don’t generate as much heat as other bulbs.

Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources What does the number inside the triangle on the bottom of plastic items mean? It identifies the kind of plastic the item is made of. Our Recycle Center only accepts items numbered 1 or 2.

Finding ways to be better stewards of all of our resources What items does the AARP Recycle Center NOT accept? Dishes and glassware Styrofoam Plastics other than those numbered 1 or 2 Cartons from soda or beer (because of the glue)

Consider giving a gift to a charity such as the Heifer Project in honor of your loved ones and encourage them to do the same in lieu of gifts this year
