part 2: nursery and toddler classes

2 What is a Supervisor? Supervisors are…
here as a resource for you, and can help you strategize to make your class the best it can be! able to direct you to the materials needed for your class, and can help you get restocked on Sundays willing to help you find a sub (if the sub list has not been helpful) in an emergency able to observe your class to better understand the children, and to look for ways to help if a child is more challenging. We are not here to judge your teaching skills. 

3 Lead Teachers: Spend time praying over every child in your class each day- it will change how you approach everything! Consider this “your ministry”, and treat these little souls with great care. Use your lesson as your quiet times- spend time in the word to surround your heart with the principles you are sharing with the children Know every child’s name before the end of the first week teaching (try flashcards!) Reach out to the parents of your class, via . Provide them with updates, suggestions, reminders. Make an effort to have your assistants in your home, and apart of your life. Get to know each other. Pray for them and their families. Be a source of strength and training for them. Please let that supervisor know what subs are coming, or if there is any other situation they should know about. Be prepared. Read over the lesson and have everything ready for the craft. Let the supervisor know if you have any questions or need anything. Feel free to change things up and make the classroom your own. Designate different teachers to do different jobs each week (i.e. diaper changing, registration, etc.) Let the supervisor know if there are any behavioral issues. Please see the handbook for all regulations. Crying should not go on for long, please feel free to text the parent if a child cannot be calmed, after 15 min.

4 Assistant Teachers: Spend time praying over every child in your class each day- it will change how you approach everything! Consider this “your ministry”, and treat these little souls with great care. Every Sunday please arrive by 8:30 for the 9, and 10:30 for the 11. On Wednesday nights please arrive NO LATER than 7:10. There is a servants table communion on Sundays from 10:30-10:40. Then prepare your classroom and check children in. Most importantly have fun and be giving, these children will remember you and how you helped teach them about the Bible in a fun and loving way. Assign 1 teacher to sign in/out kids each week, and to check for illnesses. Sanitize hands! Check in: kids wash hands before entering class ask about allergies, are they sick and/or on fever meds in last 24 hrs? if yes, they need to stay out of class ask if potty training, if they are, is a pull up on? If not, it needs to be on Assign a diaper changer to keep things moving smoothly, maybe rotate each week

5 Assistant Teachers: Help wash toys/tables near the end of class time
For discipline use redirection so the lead teacher can handle other duties If there are subs in the class, please help direct them. If the lead is out you may be needed to lead the class, as the kids are familiar with you. Ask the lead what they need help with (arranging craft, snack, etc) and try to keep busy being helpful Try not to hang back and wait for instruction, interact with the kids and engage Please don’t be on your phone during class AT ALL If the lead teacher is late, please text them and/or be ready to teach the lesson If you are late, please text the supervisor on duty and your lead teacher (do everything you can to be on time!) Please don’t sit and talk with other teachers

6 Safety and Hygiene: Hand washing, children and adults:
2 Year olds before they enter the class and Nursery classes as they enter the room. Every time you change a diaper and when you come into contact with bodily fluids (noses, feeding, spit-up, sneezing, etc.) Counters, must be used for food prep only. All other items should be placed in cabinets or teacher personal items on shelves marked for these. Toys: We have two toy bins in the classrooms. One marked for dirty toys and one for clean. Any toys that are in the “clean” basket can be placed back in the classroom when you arrive for class. As toys are done being used by a child, and especially with the little ones where toys have been placed in mouth, please place item in dirty basket. Leave them in the dirty basket in you teach in the 9am service. When 9am teachers arrive transfer clean dry toys out to be played with. At the 11am service at the end of class all items are to be sprayed with the sanitation bottle and placed in “clean” basket. These will be left there to air dry until the next class. Both services should use Lysol wipes to wipe down all tables, large toys and counters at the end of class. Diaper Changing: Please always gather all items needed for the diaper change before placing baby up for changing. (Diaper, wipes and instructions below.) Protocol for changing Diapers: Place changing paper on diaper changing area. Wear a new pair of gloves while changing each baby. After you change the baby and place them back down, please place all used items, diaper, wipes, paper and gloves inside a diaper baggie, tie and throw out. Wipe down changing area with Lysol wipe after each diaper change. Please remember to change each child, and to tell the parents if they were changed Our best defense against spreading sickness starts with the check-in of the child. A list of questions will be in your registration book. Each teacher must use their own discretion to determine if a child may need to be picked up by the parent. (Green nose, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) Please do not be afraid to do so, remember this is about all the babies! We recommend that you contact the supervisor or nurse on duty to make this determination.

8 Nursery 1: Thank you for signing up to teach in our Nursery 1 class. These children are 6 months to 12 months. These sweet babies are being introduced to Jesus for the first time with songs they can store in their heart. Helpful information you need to know: Signing In/Out Ask about allergies, have they been sick or had any fever medication in the last 24 hours There is a sign in cutoff at 9:20 and 11:20 but be gracious! Nursing moms can come and go as they please, they just need to remove their shoes. After about 15 minutes leave a note on the door for the ushers with a total number of kids/teachers (avoid opening the door) Please make an extra point to welcome new moms, who may be anxious or emotional about dropping off their little ones! Teacher/Child Ratio 1 teacher for every 2 babies for this class and it’s posted on the wall outside the classroom The class is pretty full at 10 babies and 5 teachers, for safety reasons we should not go beyond that. Contact your supervisor if you are quickly reaching this number, they will help find another teacher.

9 Nursery 1: Schedule Lead teachers please arrive minutes early, assistants minutes This class doesn’t really adhere to a schedule. Usually beginning with play time and then snack time follows. These babies love music and it’s important to remember that there is power in hearing the word through songs. Examples “Jesus Loves Me” and “We love to pat the Bible”, teaching them about Jesus’ love for us and that the Bible is a book we love and respect. As children are leaving please clean everything. Spray down or wipe all hard surfaces, including the changing table. ONLY 11am teachers should completely sanitize toys. Misc. Info. First time children may cry, this is expected. After 15 minutes of consistent crying, it’s time to call the parents. Be sure to comfort the child! If crying is intermittent, try to redirect and keep them busy. Encourage new families to keep coming and their children will adjust the more they are in there. Remember most parents feel sentimental or emotional dropping off their infants, and try to be reassuring, calming and encouraging.

10 Nursery 2

11 Nursery Two Thank you for signing up to teach in our Nursery 2 class. These children are usually 12 months to 18 months old. This is such a fun class and these mini-explorers are ready to learn songs about God and learn from you. Signing In/Out Ask about allergies, and ask if they have been sick or had any fever medication in the last 24 hours. Take their bag, check for a cup, use the white board to keep track of cups, diaper bags, diaper changes, etc. It’s easy to mix these items up with several children. Wash their hands immediately and then let them go play Keep the door closed as much as possible prevents crying. After about 15 minutes leave a note on the door for the ushers with a total number of kids/teachers (avoid opening the door)

12 Nursery Two Teacher/Child Ratio Schedule
1 teacher for every 2 children is the ratio for this class and it’s posted on the wall outside the classroom Please notify your supervisor if you are at capacity and they will help find another teacher. The class is pretty full at 12 children and 6 teachers, for safety reasons we should not go beyond that. Contact your supervisor if you are quickly reaching this number. Schedule check in (15 min) free play (15 min) songs/cradle roll (15 min) snack, preliminary cleaning…used items in the green tall “dirty” bin (15 min) diaper changes (15 min) After both services (As children are leaving) please clean everything, but only 11am service will spray toys. Spray down or wipe all hard surfaces with cleaner. Separation anxiety can be a challenge at this age. Please encourage parents to drop off quickly and not to linger. First time children may cry, this is expected. After 15 minutes of consistent crying, it’s time to call the parents. If crying is intermittent, try to redirect and keep them busy. Encourage new families to keep coming and their children will adjust the more they are in there.

Thank you for signing up to teach the toddlers! This age group is just learning about trust and the world around them, and you get to be a part of helping them learn to trust Jesus. These children are broken into three groups of 18months-younger and older twos- based on their birthdays, and their potty training progress. Routine: There will be a couple registration ladies out front to help manage check in, but one teacher will need to help with check in each week (bring the child into class and put their stuff in their “cubby”) the other teacher should be setting up free play and greeting the kids excitedly as their brought into class. Don’t expect them to sit still, and do take advantage of any and all teachable moments! Teacher/Child Ratio 1 teacher for every 3 children is the ratio for this class and it’s posted on the wall outside the classroom. Please notify your supervisor for that week if you are at capacity and they will help find another teacher. The class is full at 12 children and 4 teachers therefore safety reasons we should not go beyond that. Contact your supervisor if you are quickly reaching this number.

15 Toddler Turtles (A, B, C):
Schedule check in free play, signing songs, & prayer begin curriculum using Play n worship trifold snack, preliminary cleaning…used items in the green tall “dirty” bin diaper changes/potty As children are leaving please clean everything. Spray down or wipe all hard surfaces with wipes and 9 am service leave dirty toys in dirty bin. 11 am teachers will spray all dirty toys before leaving.

16 Notes on How to Be Successful in Every Class:
ACTIVE learning Goal explanation: It’s not an active learning experience if even one learner is sitting as a passive observer. active learning is student-based, not teacher-based. In active learning, students make discoveries rather than relying on the teachers to impart facts. It moves at the kids’ pace and is not entirely predictable. It’s fun for teachers because they learn new things right along with the students. There’s always something new to learn. Be Prepared—Read through the lesson several times on your own so you’re aware of where the transitions are, the space you’ll need, and the necessary supplies. You may also want to note activities which may be challenging for particular students and be prepared with possible adaptations or alternatives. Take Charge—It’s sometimes easy for kids to get sidetracked, particularly if there are several discussion questions in a row or if the activity is a highly active one. Gently but firmly redirect kids back to the activity at hand. Help Kids with Transitions—It can be disconcerting and frustrating to move too quickly from one activity to the next; some kids need more time to complete activities or to process ideas. Help kids avoid this frustration by giving them time warnings a few minutes before you’ll be ready to move on to the next activity. Move Around the Classroom—Your presence throughout the classroom will help ensure that kids stay on task and finish activities in the time allotted. It will also help you get to know students better, and they’ll feel more comfortable asking for help when they need it. Use Attention-Getting Signals—When you’re ready to move on to another activity or the noise level is getting a little too high, use an attention-getting signal as a fun way to get kids’ attention and make sure they’re moving along with you. (i.e. you clap once and then they clap twice.... Or you say “who is with me?” and they get to respond “I am!”)
