Safety In Science Mrs. Ostrowski

Emergency valve shut off
This can shut off the gas, water and electricity in the lab in case of emergencies. A key is used to unlock the valves. T

Fire extinguisher Used to put out fires in the classroom, may also be used as a weapon during a "fight" situation.

Safety shower This is used after a chemical explosion. It is responsible for getting the most amount of chemicals off of you as quickly as possible. This is NOT to be used during a fire. There is NEVER an "accident" when around the safety shower.

Eye wash safety This is to be used if something were to get into our eyes. Works like a water fountain providing a gentle stream to clean out your eyes.

Vent/fume hood This is to be used if there were a more dangerous chemical experiment. It is equipped with the gas, water and ventilation.

Goggle sanitizer This is used to sanitize (kill bacteria) on the goggles after each use. It is NOT like a dishwasher that cleans the glasses. You may clean the goggles with soap and water if needed.

Fire blanket Located inside the vent/fume hood behind the white paper. This is used if someone were to catch on fire, this would not allow oxygen to get in and feed the fire.

Procedures Fire drill: Class lines up and exits to the right outside the classroom. Outside we line up as far away from the school in the parking lot. If you are the last person, shut the door please. We are silent during this process waiting to hear attendance once lined up outside. If you are in the bathroom or LC when the alarms sound go to the NEAREST class and tell the teacher your name so that we know you are accounted for.  Severe Weather: We exit the classroom to the left and head down to LC/Spanish hallway. Position 1 is facing the lockers sitting criss cross applesauce. Position 2 is when we are kneeling down facing the lockers protecting our neck and head.

Procedure Continued Run, Hide Fight: Run: If the danger is far away and we KNOW we can get out of the building safely, leave. Eventually making your way to Indian Trail when you are out of harms way. Hide: When we are not sure where the immediate danger is and we cannot safely escape. Find a spot in the room where you cannot see the door or windows leading to the hallway and sit silently. The door should be shut and lights turn off, and the blinds are closed. Fight: We are in immediate danger. Use anything you can to protect yourself and others around.

Discussion Questions 1. Why is it important that we are silent during all scenerios? 2. Why is it important that we do NOT call our parents during any drills or actual scenerios? 3. What should I do if there is a run, hide fight and I am in the bathroom/hall? 4. If Mrs. Ostrowski is not in class and there is a sub, what should we tell the sub about all safety protocol? 5. Where does Mrs. Ostrowski keep her emergency plans?
