cancer nurse coordinator roles are part of a strategy that contributes to the aims of care coordination care coordination remains a function and responsibility of the whole health system

7 Cancer nurse coordinator - specifications
DHBs need to: fund new clinical positions focus on the front end of the pathway, not oncology services support streamlining services and referrals between DHBs collaborate regionally when developing and implementing these roles Objective is to: improve the experience for patients, including their family and whānau, with cancer or suspected cancer improve overall access and timeliness of access to diagnostic and treatment services for patients with cancer

8 Learning from Australia
the problem that the coordinator roles are solving needs to be clearly defined before implementing the roles coordinators must have the appropriate training and skills the coordinator roles require the mandate to make changes to systems and processes if they are to improve how patients’ journey through the system without this mandate the coordinator roles will just be filling the gaps in systems and processes need to educate other health professionals about cancer so all health professionals remain responsible for coordinating care, this means that the coordinators can focus on high and complex needs patients

9 Key messages from Violet Platt
aim to make themselves (the cancer nurse coordinators) redundant if you (the cancer nurse coordinator) has done the same thing five times, is there someone else who could be doing it or is there a process issue that needs to be fixed? three circles of influence the patient the team / clinical colleagues strategic / the system need to have good training / education and development programmes develop mentoring approaches and one-to-one peer support
