Agenda Welcome Ice Breaker Strategic Planning and Annual Planning Overview Panel Discussion Q & A Welcome and we are so glad to see so many of you. I know this is a full session. Please make sure you silence your cell phones but we encourage you to Tweet throughout this session by using #shrmlead. We also want you to be present so please let those s that continue to appear to just sit there for an hour and really become engaged so that you can take back some of the new ideas to your chapters and state councils. Again, please take your own notes and jot down your ideas since we will not be taking notes but the .Ppt slides will be available after the Summit on the VLRC. We have a parking lot for questions that we don’t have immediate answers. Also, let us know topics or areas you would like to hear more about throughout the year or any great ideas. To encourage you to participate we have SHRM Bucks which can be redeemed at the SHRMstore during the summit so use them, don’t take them home! To start out how many of you are attending the VLS for the first time. That is good for us to know and our panelists to know so they have an idea of the level of experience we have in this session. 2015 SHRM VOLUNTEER LEADERS' SUMMIT

ICE BREAKER Please discuss the following for 5 minutes: Strategic Planning Successes Strategic Planning Challenges 2015 SHRM VOLUNTEER LEADERS' SUMMIT

4 Annual Planning vs. Strategic planning
strategic plan looks out into the future two, three, or even as many as five years to determine what it is you hope to be accomplishing and then prioritizes the essential strategies for achieving your aspirations Annual Planning The annual work-plan provides the nuts and bolts of how the necessary work will get done In a strategic planning process your organization should clearly describe or affirm its purpose for being (mission), determines what it wants to achieve over the next few years (vision), and then decides on a set of 3-5 strategic priorities to guide the organization towards achievement of the vision.  The strategic plan provides the framework for the annual work-plans or action-plans. In short, a strategic plan looks out into the future two, three, or even as many as five years to determine what it is you hope to be accomplishing and then prioritizes the essential strategies for achieving your aspirations. With this strategic framework to guide you, work-plans can be developed annually that include specific objectives, outcome measures, and detailed action plans (who, by when) linked to the operating budget. Your strategic plan and your annual work-plan go hand-in-hand. The annual work-plan provides the nuts and bolts of how the necessary work will get done, but without the strategic planning framework to guide you, the annual planning process will be anything but strategic. It is important that you understand the difference between the two because it may not be necessary to have a strategic planning meeting every year but you may want a annual planning meeting which also include 2015 SHRM VOLUNTEER LEADERS' SUMMIT

10 Components of Annual Planning
a. Provide direction for chapters/state councils (all volunteer committees) for the next year. b. Define the scope of the organizations activities in terms of what it will and will not do. c. Match the activities to the environment/communities in which it operates so that it maximizes opportunities and minimizes threats. d. Synchronize the organizations activities to its resource capacity. e. Review and revise your strategic plan. After you have completed your 3 or 5 year strategic plan then on an annual basis you need to have an annual planning meeting. You do not have to go through the entire process of a strategic plan each year but you do need to continue planning and reviewing your plan. You may have to change timelines or you may feel a goal needs to be totally abandoned. 2015 SHRM VOLUNTEER LEADERS' SUMMIT
