2 Background to TBCSA The Tourism Business Council of SA (TBCSA) is the umbrella organisation for organised business for the travel and tourism An active member of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and taking part in Nedlac processes Mandate to provide a unified voice for the private sector & provide ROUTE to the Government for our members Membership based organisation with sectoral and corporate role players in the industry as members Impact on both leisure and business travel 2019/11/28

3 Economic Benefits of tourism - WTTC
GDP ZAR bn -1.9 of total GDP contribution JOBS 1.5 million jobs in 2018 9.2% of total employment TOURISM’S ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION Tourism’s contribution represents 8.6% of all economic activity in SA 64% of the travel economy generated by leisure visitors 44% of tourism spend came from international travelers 2018/04/10 3

4 Experiences and impact of Crime
50 Follow home robberies from ORTIA reported on TBCSA system (more reported to SAPS). Fraud against guesthouses and lack of willingness to solve these issues 2016 Service delivery protests in key tourists destinations – in Mpumalanga only, there were 53 protests in 2017, 72 in 2018 and 41 up to 8 August 2019. 10 Tourists hijacked in Mpumalanga between June and July 2019 – Road between Sabie, Graskop and Hazyview is a hotspot. Sandton, Jhb CBD, Kempton Park and Cape Town as hotspots for armed robberies Traffic police soliciting bribes from tourists in MP. Out of 460 respondents to a recent SATSA survey, 266 (57%) revealed that their groups/visitors to SA have been victims of crime One medium sized tour operator had R8m worth of cancellations within 3 days of the Ukranian tourist’s death. 2019/11/28

5 Private sector initiatives
Tourism Safety Initiative Crime Incident and Investigation Management System (CiiMS) system Links suspects to a series of cases , vehicles, syndicates used and cellphones Able to analyse CCTV camera footage from hotels and guesthouses Blacklisting of suspects - card fraud Stolen rental vehicles recovered Vetting of staff (including shuttle drivers) prior to employment Link with SAPS Natjoints for vehicle recoveries and other investigations Link with Bryte Insurance to assist police with investigations of house robberies TBCSA is a member of Gauteng Provjoints Joint Action with Kruger Lowveld on issues of tourism safety Industry Crisis Communications Plan Co-chair of National Tourism Safety Forum and jointly developed the National Tourism Safety Strategy with the Department of Tourism . 2019/11/28

6 What we are doing now Engaged with Minister Kubayi-Ngubane to repurpose the funds that TBCSA channels to SAT every year. Money to be used to create safety n hotspots. SAT/ TBCSA roadshows to communicate that South Africa is open for business. Tourism Safety App ready for launch and implementation Tourism Safety Monitors Tourism safety partnership with Mpumalanga 2019/11/28 TBCSA 2017
