1 Achievement Standard 90717 v2
What’s in the Standard? Achievement Standard v2 Describe the processes and patterns of Evolution L3 3 Credits

2 AS 90459 v 2 Describe genetic variation & change
Achievement Criteria Achievement. Achievement with Merit Achievement with Excellence Describe processes and patterns of evolution. Describe processes and explain patterns of evolution. Describe processes and discuss patterns of evolution.

3 Explanatory Notes Processes of evolution are limited to
ways in which speciation occurs (sympatric, allopatric) reproductive isolating mechanisms that contribute to speciation (geographical, temporal, ecological, behavioural, structural barriers, polyploidy) the role of natural selection.

4 Patterns of evolution will be selected from: convergent evolution, divergent evolution (including adaptive radiation), co-evolution, punctuated equilibrium, gradualism.

5 Prior Knowledge Required
Describe the key ideas that underpin the theory of evolution Understand the concept of natural selection and different types, incl fitness, adaptation Define the terms species and population Describe gene and allele frequency Define speciation, gene flow, genetic equilibrium Identify sources of genetic variation in a gene pool Identify agents of change that lead to change in a gene pool Define the terms genetic drift, the founder effect and the bottleneck effect

6 Course Outline Intro Evolutionary theory Prior Knowledge
2. Processes of Evolution a) Speciation allopatric & sympatric b) Isolating mechanisms 3. Patterns of Evolution a) Rate of change b) patterns convergent , divergent, parallel 4. New Zealand Examples
