3 What’s in Each Box? Atomic # = number of protons (and electrons) in the neutral atom.

4 Atomic Mass Most of the mass of an atom consists of protons and neutrons. So…the atomic mass is generally the number of protons + neutrons where each proton and neutron has a mass of 1 atomic mass unit (amu)

5 So why do the atomic masses have fractions?
The atomic mass is actually a weighted average of the isotopes (same protons, different neutrons) of each element.
