1 Pathways to Success Be a Good Worker (lesson #6)
Being a good worker is important in keeping a job. Think about 2 people you would like to work with, and two people you would NOT like to work with. 3 Why are people fired from jobs?
80% of people who get fired do so because of poor work habits. Which of these describes you? Works hard lazy Wants to work doesn’t want to work Act pleasant Sassy Treats others fairly cheats the boss When people have poor work habits, it causes their co-workers to have to work harder and longer. A good worker wants to work, will work hard, will act pleasant, and treat others fairly.

4 A positive attitude Can be learned!
Good work habits can be learned as well. Looking nice and being friendly are important for a good impression. Take the Grooming Checklist on page 3 of your booklet. You should have more checks in the left hand column. Your checks in the right hand column are things to work on. A positive attitude and good work habits can be learned. It takes time and effort. Take the grooming checklist on page 3 of your booklet. You should have more checks in the left hand column. If you checked things in the right hand column, these are things you should work on. Other things to consider are: Are you noisy? Do you swear or cuss? Do you gossip about others? Are you rude? You may know how to do the job, but if you are sloppy or sound bad, that will give a bad impression.

5 Traits Employers Want…
Look at and fill out the traits worksheet on page 4 of your booklet. Employers are looking for those 6 traits listed. What are some additional traits they might want? Flexibility On time Reliable Positive, friendly attitude Initiative Do the word search on page 5 of your booklet. Then rate yourself with the quiz on page 6. Fill out the traits worksheet on page 4 on your booklet. Talk about each of these traits and what they mean. How will they impact the employer and the other employees? Do the word search on page 5, then rate yourself on page 6.

6 Your Co-workers Co-workers can make work fun, or get you in trouble!
Tips for working with others: Work out problems by talking Be friendly Respect others Be a team worker Smile Show energy and be happy Cooperate Show understanding Don’t get too chummy with one person! At most jobs you will be working with others. It can be fun when co-workers get along with each other. Read the tips for working with others.

7 Keeping Your Job—remember the “Bs”
Be someone to count on Be neat Be on time Be dressed right for the job Be honest Be willing to learn Be sure to call if you can’t come Be willing to get along Be aware of employee rules Be sure to leave your personal life at home Discuss the Bs in keeping your job.

8 More Bs… Be sure to give a two week notice before leaving a job
Be aware of safety Be responsible Be willing to talk about problems Be flexible Be proud of what you produce—it can be one of the greatest rewards of your work. discuss

9 Problems? Read and discuss the common problems described on page of your booklet. What should these people do? Write down the correct solutions. Pages of your booklet have examples of some problems that can happen at work. Discuss what these people should do and write down the correct solutions.

10 Be successful on the job by…
Arriving at work early Finish your work Be honest with your employer Follow company rules Get along with others Do a good day’s work Be willing to learn Do the job quickly Only take time for breaks and lunch you should These are ways to be successful on the job. Will you do these things to keep your job? People who follow these rules may be promoted on the job or given a raise in pay.
