Think about the “funeral” they’re having, who they’re hiding/helping escape, who the Nazis are searching for, the roles of Peter, Mama, and Henrik, etc.

What Would You Bring?
What would you do if you had to suddenly leave the country? What would you take with you? Remember, you can only take very small items that could be carried or easily hidden.
On one side of your paper, you fill your “bag” with items to take as well as items you’d hate to leave.
Under the bag, write a paragraph justifying or explaining why you’d bring these items.
On the other side of the paper, choose a character from the novel and fill his or her “bag” with the items you think they would take and hate to leave.
Then, write a paragraph explaining your choices.
