8 Remaining Lands The remainder of the PowerPoint will discuss how we acquired this land. -Treaties with Britain -Mexican Cession -Texas Annexation -Gadsden Purchase

9 7 Texas Annexation -Texas belonged to Mexico and they opened the land up and invited the Americans under certain conditions… - Become Mexican citizens - Live under Mexican laws -Convert to Catholicism Led by Stephen Austin * NO SLAVERY! Ironically the Americans who moved on these lands were southern farmers… and they wanted to bring SLAVES. But remember….Mexico outlawed slavery over 100 years ago! This became the driving force for the Texas Territory

10 The Alamo- The Fight to the Death
Santa Anna takes over in Mexico, favored a strong government Texans rebel and form their own republic/nation (Lone Star Republic) Santa Anna retaliates at The Alamo and orders the Texans to be slaughtered…thought this would destroy their morale but only boosted it…”Remember the Alamo”

11 Battle of San Jacinto-Revenge
Surprise attack Over in 20 minutes Hundreds killed Santa Anna and 700 others captured Signed a treaty recognizing Texan independence Borders are south of Rio Grande (not accepted by Mexico) United States Victory!!!!! Texas becomes an independent Territory “Lone Star Republic

12 Now What?! Texas applied for state hood and was turned down for 10 years The Problem centered around adding Texas as a slave state or a free state. * President Jackson secretly wanted to annex (add) Texas but he knew that would cause problems, so he did nothing. Eventually Indiana sought admission into the Union. Indiana entered as a FREE STATE Texas admitted as a SLAVE STATE This allowed a continual balance in the Union.

13 8 Oregon Country - New boy in town…James K. Polk
A firm believer in Manifest Destiny (expansion) Election of 1844 Polk vs. Clay Polk reasoned with the northern that if he became president and they accepted the Texas annexation he’d do something for them OREGON (free state) “54’40’ or fight”: Polk wanted this line to be the border between Canada and US Settled for 49’40’ HALF kept his bargain: He had to compromise on the territory.

15 9 Gadsden Purchase US acquires all of Arizona and New Mexico
Purchased ($10 Million) to get a railroad across the entire continent (“Transcontinental”) "coast-to-coast".

16 …..Not quite done with Mexico!
10 …..Not quite done with Mexico! Greed James K. Polk - President Had his eyes on the Mexican/ California a territory for further Expansion. Sends Zachary Taylor with troops to Rio Grande (Border of Texas & Mexico) Expected a Mexican army to show up…and they did. President James K. Polk sent a expedition onto the Mexican territory trying to instigate a War between the US and Mexico. - The Mexican Troops shot the American “Trespassers” Polk took that to Congress and said “Blood was spilled on American soil!” THIS MEANS WAR…

17 His side of the story “ We have tried every effort at reconciliation… But now, after reiterated menaces, Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil.” - James K. Polk, war message to Congress, May 11, 1846

18 Mexican American War War ended with the “Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo”
Mexico gives up the rest of their land (California, New Mexico, Arizona) “Mexican Cession” - ($15 Million as an agreement for all the land)
