2 Desire for Normalcy Senator Warren G. Harding was the Republican Candidate for President in 1920 election promising a return to normalcy. This election was the first time women could vote. Friends & political supporters were given jobs in government by Pres. Harding. They were known as the Ohio Gang.

3 Teapot Dome Scandal Biggest scandal and symbol of corruption in the Harding Administration was the Teapot Dome Scandal which involved Albert Fall. What did he do? Before scandal came out Harding suffered heart attack & died.

4 Vice President Calvin Coolidge became President – fired & replaced remaining members of Ohio Gang.
Under Coolidge, Congress aimed to create favorable climate for business. How? Coolidge wins 1924 election & women (Nellie Tayloe Ross – Wyoming & Miriam Ferguson – Texas - win governors’ races).

5 Foreign policy Harding & Coolidge favored limited role for the nation in world affairs - isolationism Harding administration promoted peace. 2/1922 – Five-Power Treaty was signed by U.S., Britain, Japan, France & Italy. 1st time in modern history that world powers agreed to disarm. 8/1928 – US joined 14 other nations & signed the Kellogg-Briand Pact – which outlawed war.

6 More Friendlier Neighbor
When Harding took office, American troops were stationed in Haiti, the Dominican Republic & Nicaragua. After the Dominican Republic & Nicaragua held elections the U.S. withdrew troops. American investors asked Pres. Coolidge to send troops to Mexico but he chose to negotiate instead & reached a settlement.
