RMIT Open Program Understanding and Using the Graduate Destination Survey (GDS) and Course Experience Survey (CEQ) Closing Remarks Presented by Planning & Research

2 The Challenge Ahead To improve RMIT’s ‘Good Teaching’ scores
We are improving, but we need to improve this rate to reach our strategic objectives! To ensure the relevance of the survey We need to ensure all stakeholders (e.g. students and staff) are cognisant of the CEQ and its importance. You can make a difference!

3 Improving RMIT’s ‘Good Teaching’
Do things that ‘make a difference’ Refer to ‘Student Top Ten’ concerns etc. Set targets Promote good T&L stories Communicate actions and improvements made Make it visible to the next generation of students

4 Ensuring the relevance of the CEQ
Road shows and university forums to reach Final year students Teaching staff Service delivery and support staff Involve Alumni, Student Groups, Student Ambassadors, T&L Directors Promote CEQ/ encourage response amongst 2006 graduates GDS/CEQ Flier for Final Year Students Alumni promotion

5 Other institutions’ experience (1)
Utrecht (Netherlands) Developed a “Higher in the Rankings” team to address their poor performance in a national student survey. Developed an audit report from interviewing stakeholders at all levels in the university Implemented changes (e.g. timetabling, study guides, layout and physical appearance of university)

6 Other institutions’ experience (2)
Napier University (Scotland) In developing a project to look at improving student retention, they found: Developing a few strategies and sticking with them was critical It was necessary to plan how to collect appropriate data to measure improvements, and to budget for these measurements for several years

7 Other institutions’ experience (3)
Alverno (United States) Developed ‘Characteristics of Learning-Centred Institutions’ – A Framework Achieving clarity about learning outcomes Coordinating teaching and assessment to promote student learning Aligning structures and resources to serve student learning Working continuously to improve the environment for learning

8 Key Point In order to meet RMIT’s strategic targets, and improve our overall reputation in the market, we need to pro-actively address our relatively low CEQ ‘Good Teaching’ scores. We need to improve our effort of recent years.

9 Related Open Programs Developed by Policy and Planning
