1 Meet the teacher Woodpecker Class
Class teacher: Miss Collins TA: Mrs Griffin

2 Reading Children should read to an adult for 10-15mins everyday.
Please sign/write in your child’s contact book at least 3x a week. We will encourage to change their own reading books but will check that the contact book says that the book has been finished first. It is not essential to read the whole book in one go. Please ask your children about what they are reading and check they are understanding. Children will be heard to read in school and will all have a guided reading session throughout the week which is where we teach reading skills ‘VIPERS.’

3 Vipers Each week we will have a reading focus where we are looking for these specific elements within the texts we’re reading using these types of questions See handout

4 Year 4- Woodpeckers Home Challenges
Homework Year 4- Woodpeckers Home Challenges Homework READING- Children are expected to read everyday. Please ensure these are returned daily with any letters/ notes inside. These will be checked daily. Please write in when you read with your child. Your child can also write in their record book themselves. SPELLINGS- These will go home termly. Spelling test will take place on a Friday. They will be based on the expected spelling list for Year 4 as well as common misspelt homophones. The meaning of the words should also be learnt, as tests will involve the use of the word in a sentence. MYMATHS- Challenges are set weekly that link in with current learning. These are to be completed at home, if this is a problem, a homework club in run on Monday lunch time. If you have lost your log on please ask and we can provide you with a new one. Below are some homework challenges that are OPTIONAL. Children are not expected to complete these but can if they wish. Please send in any completed challenges to share! These are only ideas. The challenges are linked to our topic The Romans

5 Times table Rockstars Children should still have their login for Times Tables Rock Stars, if you have lost or forgotten it, please let me know. This is an fun interactive way to practice times tables at home. Year 4 should be focusing on making sure they are comfortable with their 3x tables and their 4x tables as this will help them move on to their 6 and 8x tables.

6 Maths Build it – physical manipulatives
Draw it – using drawn diagrams on whiteboards or in their books Prove it – being able to answer questions whilst building on their knowledge Example: Place value counters, drawing place value grids, proving knowledge of place value by answering questions There will be a document explaining the way we teach in more detail coming round to you at a later date

7 English Based on a text each term Related to the topic where possible
This terms book is Roman Diary by Richard Platt which follows a young girl through her life working for a rich Roman family to freedom. To link with our book, we are covering newspaper articles and diary entries. We will be developing our descriptive vocabulary using thesauruses and dictionaries as well as skills such as reporting big events. This will also relate to our upcoming author visit, Nick Butterworth.

8 PE Kit White t-shirt, blue shorts and a dark tracksuit plus trainers
PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays this year Children need PE kit in every day in case the timetable changes for any reason. Earrings must be taken out for PE, we cannot tape them and we are not allowed to remove them for your child. Long hair tied back –please. 9 Uniform Reminder that the uniform is now red and grey with red summer dresses, no navy should be worn. Please make sure everything is labelled! Earrings must be taken out for PE, we cannot tape them and we are not allowed to remove them for your child.

10 Reminders Snacks should be fruit, dried fruit or cheese
Most information can be found on OWL organiser and the calendar. Any questions etc… please try and speak to myself or Mrs Griffin in the first instance. Children should be in school between 8.30 and 8.45 am. During this time pupils’ get ready for the day and have early work tasks to complete.
