The 1951 United Nations’ Refugee Convention defines a refugee as a person who, “owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality.” What do you know about refugees? What is the “refugee crisis?”

How can reading a graphic novel strengthen your reading skills? Example: Look at the bottom panel on page 12 and guess the meaning of: Supplication Succour Look at the pictures and consider the context when figuring out vocabulary.

16 Activity Skim through the book and choose a picture that stands out to you. Read that page. Do a free-write on why you chose this picture and how you think it might fit in with the themes of the whole book. Share the picture with your small group.
