Diamonds are considered by many to be one of the most precious stones in the world
68% of the world’s diamonds come from Africa
Many diamonds are illegally smuggled out of Africa
and are being used to finance wars & conflicts in Africa
These are known as conflict diamonds

3. Rebel groups force people to mine for the diamonds and use much of them money to finance civil wars vs. the government
Recently, the United Nations and the United States have banned the sale of conflict diamonds
A big issue has been determining which diamonds come from these “conflict” zones and which do not
The UN started the Kimberly Process, which is supposed to determine the origin of all diamonds and place a small stamp inside the diamond
However, the process is not perfect.
Conflict minerals are starting to replace conflict diamonds.
