What do you see? What are these people doing? Why are they doing it?

Protests During the Civil Rights Movement

Boycotts A boycott is a peaceful protest where people refuse to buy or use certain goods. Montgomery Bus Boycott Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus. Many African Americans stopped riding the bus - no money for the bus system!

Civil Disobedience Civil Disobedience is the nonviolent refusal to obey the law. Freedom Riders were a group of people who rode busses into the segregated south in protest of the segregated interstate bus system Many people were beaten and tortured, but they did not engage in violence

Marches Marches were gatherings of people marching in protest of something. One of the best examples of marches during the Civil Rights Movement was the march in Selma, Alabama 600 people were marching, police violence started and was caught on camera (600 is equal to everyone in the school!!) Once people saw the footage, they were very mad! It gave momentum to the protesters.

Writing Prompt What method of protest do you think was the most effective during the Civil Rights Movement? The least effective? Provide evidence and reasoning in your answers. Share your answers with a partner! Did they change your mind?
