1 Warm-Up Imagine dropping a sugar cube into a cup of coffee and the same sugar cube into a cup of cold lemonade. In which cup do you predict the sugar cube will dissolve first? Why? Predict what you could do to make the sugar cube dissolve faster? Explain the difference between the two types of igneous rocks.

2 BRING IN A SOIL SAMPLE! About 1 cup in a plastic bag or container. Make sure to label!

3 Make sure I have your lesson plan!
PRESENTATION TIME!!! Make sure I have your lesson plan!

4 Weathering vs. Erosion video
Prepare to write 1 complete sentence explaining the difference between WEATHERING and EROSION.

5 Make a T-chart and fill it in as I go over the types of weathering.

6 Physical (Mechanical) Weathering
Rocks are broken down into smaller pieces by external conditions: Frost wedging Plant roots Burrowing of animals Friction and impact Exfoliation

7 Just like a pothole!

8 What happens when you freeze a coke can?
The liquid expands, and often times the can will bust!

9 Plant Roots

10 Friction and Impact

11 Animals Burrowing

12 Exfoliation Surface layers of rock peel off

13 Chemical Weathering Break down rock through chemical changes: Water
Oxygen Carbon dioxide Living organisms Acid rain

14 Water weathers by dissolving

15 Oxygen Oxidation (iron and oxygen in presence of water) aka Rust

16 Carbon Dioxide Dissolves in rainwater and creates carbonic acid

17 Living organisms Lichens grow on rocks produce weak acids and weather rock

18 What Type of Weathering?

24 Rate of Weathering Use the textbook pages to explain how rock characteristics and climate affect the rate of weathering. Take notes!

25 How Does Surface Area affect the Rate of Weathering?
Demo: Smarties and water Create a hypothesis: Which Smartie (whole or broken) do you think will dissolve the quickest?

26 Erosion The process by which WATER, ICE, WIND, or GRAVITY moves fragments of rock or soil

27 Water Erosion Rivers, streams, and runoff

28 Ice Erosion from glaciers

29 Wind Erosion

30 Matching weathering vs. erosion
Moves particles of sediment. Creates sediment. Chemical and physical are the two types. Animals cause_______. Frost Wedging is an example of ________. Water causes ______.

31 Dice Roll

32 Exit Ticket Complete a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting chemical and mechanical (physical) weathering.
