Members: Dave Andersen Tom Anderson Dave Clark Carla Ellis Frans Kaashoek Jay Lepreau Guru Parulkar Matt Welsh

2 Application Domains Networks of sensors & actuators Embedded systems
Disruption (delay, disconnection)-tolerant Application-specific networks Large scale data management / data grid Real-time data acquisition Pervasive / ubicomp / mobile Location-aware

3 Example Applications (with Social Relevance)
Health monitoring (beyond the home environment) Disaster recovery Understanding and affecting the planet in real-time Digital life Managing vast personal data Controlled sharing, long-term, finding Managing the auto commute Medical accidents = 0 Avoided applications that historically have been pitched – e.g. education, becoming a “service org” to science. Or were considered “somebody else’s problem” – telepresence and visualization belong to graphics folks E-voting too controversial and “loaded” Applications that industry is claiming to do. Also what other breakouts had as their topic.

4 The “Ilities” Security Privacy Usability Permanence Availability
Flexibility Adaptability Self-* Control Timeliness Programmability of lots of devices

5 Hard Research Problems “What don’t we know how to do?”
106 plug-and-play devices Balancing security and usability and flexibility Policy expression Integrating evolution into our distributed systems 5 9’s Exobyte personal storage Projection of the physical world into the digital world Finding stuff – to search everything These are the “Geeky versions of the example applications The question was “what are the missing things we don’t know how to do now?” that we need for the applications
