1 5/26 Opener!!! If 59 kj of heat energy are added to 100g of water (c=4.18 j/g*C) what is the change in temperature of the water?

2 Gummy Bear Demonstration
4/16/17

3 Introduction The thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate produces potassium chloride and an excess of oxygen, which is sufficient to ignite the Gummy bear. What is the chemical reaction for this process? The heat produced continues to decompose the potassium chlorate resulting in a very rapid combustion reaction.

4 Procedures Place a small amount (~5g) of potassium chlorate in the test tube (~1 cm in depth) Securely clamp the test tube with opening pointed in safe direction. Heat the potassium chlorate with the burner until molten. Remove heat source and turn off. With tongs, add a Gummy bear to the molten KClO3 Stand back. The reaction will be immediate.

6 Energy Calculations How many grams of sugar are in a gummy bear?
With you table determine the average mass of a gummy bear based on your sample. Show your data & calculations! How many moles of sugar are in 1 gummy bear? What is the molar mass of Sucrose? How do you calculate moles from a mass value? Use the enthalpy of the reaction to calculate the expected energy released in the demonstration. C12H22O11(s) + 12O2(g) → 12CO2(g) + 11H2O(l) + heat ∆H° = kJ/mol Is this an endothermic or exothermic reaction? How much energy does the combustion of your gummy bear heat 100g of water? (cwater=4.184 J/g*C)
