6 We have three years to make an impact: what do we want for our students when they leave our doors?

7 MacArthur Middle School is an authorized IB World School
Top 3 Things to know about IB ALL MacArthur Students are IB Students! IB is NOT a class. IB is the type of school, MYP refers to the grade level IB = International Baccalaureate MYP = Middle Years Programme (grades 6-10)

8 The IB: Building a better world through education
Empowering students to create a better, more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. ●Learner Profile ●Approaches to Learning ●Think critically and challenge assumptions ●Take responsible action ●Consider perspectives through local and global contexts Broad, balanced education Significant content that meets rigorous international standards This is our big picture and our purpose We are fostering the growth and development of another human being; and that goes beyond the daily learning objective. We have to keep this focus in mind when we plan for instruction, when we design policies, implement programs,

9 Contexts Interdisciplinary Connections Global & Local Perspectives
Concepts Interdisciplinary Connections Global & Local Perspectives Contexts PBIS Content Student Outcomes: LP, ATLS, Growth MS, Hope Methodology: effective approaches to teaching & learning AVID Strategies Inquiry & Action Authentic Learning Experiences Kids At Hope Programs vs. programming: students are at the center of everything we do. The IB is programming - it’s our approach to teaching and learning. IF even one aspect of the mYP framework is missing, we are not delivering the education we said we would. The programs are vehicles for delivering specific outcomes; they are a vehicle. No concept = no IB education; no soar tickets = still provide positive supports (ferrari vs. peddle car).

14 Advancement Via Individual Determination
We are SO lucky to have an AVID program at MacArthur! Regardless of their life circumstances, AVID students overcome obstacles and achieve success. They graduate and attend college at higher rates, but more importantly, they can think critically, collaborate, and set high expectations to confidently conquer the challenges that await them.

25 How will our students be graded?
Grades are given to middle school students to document progress toward and mastery of course content, skills, and standards. Teachers shall use points to evaluate individual assignments. In core subjects (English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, and World and Classical Languages), students shall take a quarterly assessment. These assessments are aligned to course standards and are used to monitor student progress. For students in grades 6 and 7, the score on the quarterly assessment counts as 5% of the quarter grade and for students in grade 8, the score on the quarterly assessment counts as 10% of the quarter grade. All assignments shall have a due date. Assignments submitted after the due date shall be penalized on a sliding scale basis, as described in the syllabus or course outline, and determined by the course content team in advance.

26 How will my child be graded?

27 How will my child be graded?
Students shall have one additional opportunity to improve their scores on each of at least three (3) but no more than five (5) of the total graded qualifying assessments, activities, or assignments which demonstrate knowledge of course content, skills, and standards and count toward a student’s marking period grade. GFE Good Faith Effort=50% NHI Not Handed In=40%

28 How will my child be graded?
Anne Arundel County Public Schools offers an easy-to-use secure website that allows parents/legal guardians in grades 1 – 12 to engage in their child’s academic success. ParentCONNECTxp supplements, not replaces, existing tools that currently support communication between you, your child’s teacher(s) and the school. It is the expectation that Teachers are updating grades weekly.

29 Uniform Policy Pants/Shorts- Khaki tan pants, Capri tan pants, tan “joggers” and tanorts must be worn and appropriately secured around the waist. Shorts must not be any shorter than mid thigh. Students may wear MacArthur Middle School spirit tops any day of the week with appropriate uniform bottoms. Other tops may include correct grade level solid colored sweaters or sweatshirts. “Hoodies” are not permitted. Jackets and coats may not be worn in class and must be kept in your locker. If a sweater or sweatshirt is worn, the grade level polo must be underneath with the collar visible. Skirts/Skorts/Jumpers- All must be khaki (tan, not denim) worn properly and securely around the waist and may not be any shorter than mid thigh. 35 All scholars at MacArthur are IB Learners, all scholars
should strive to be IB Scholars! Let’s look at what that means...

36 We want to ensure that all staff, scholars, and parents are aware and practicing schoolwide expectations regarding behavior. Initial areas of focus include: Hallways and Transitions Bathroom policy Entry and Dismissal Class tardiness Cafeteria, Library Passes Cell Phone Policy Uniform policy

37 The IB Scholar Program Goals.
Promote and support a safe and orderly environment for all students. Provide recognition for students meeting/exceeding behavior expectations. Show students how to be a successful IB learner. To serve as a symbol of encouragement and motivation. To serve as a recognizable entry ticket for school-wide activities (such as dances, gym time, cafeteria recess, etc.), and activities in the classroom, team-based, school-wide, PBIS, Kids at HOPE, etc.

38 How to be an IB Scholar. IB scholars know the Learner Profile traits and they exhibit them throughout the school. To become an IB scholar students will: Study the profile traits through in class lessons. Study the schoolwide behavior expectations by practicing them. Demonstrate their knowledge. Receive their tag.
