Programs vs. programming: students are at the center of everything we do. The IB is programming - it’s our approach to teaching and learning. IF even one aspect of the mYP framework is missing, we are not delivering the education we said we would. The programs are vehicles for delivering specific outcomes; they are a vehicle. No concept = no IB education; no soar tickets = still provide positive supports (ferrari vs. peddle car).

25. How will our students be graded?
Grades are given to middle school students to document progress toward and mastery of course content, skills, and standards. Teachers shall use points to evaluate individual assignments.
In core subjects (English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, and World and Classical Languages), students shall take a quarterly assessment. These assessments are aligned to course standards and are used to monitor student progress. For students in grades 6 and 7, the score on the quarterly assessment counts as 5% of the quarter grade and for students in grade 8, the score on the quarterly assessment counts as 10% of the quarter grade.
All assignments shall have a due date. Assignments submitted after the due date shall be penalized on a sliding scale basis, as described in the syllabus or course outline, and determined by the course content team in advance.

Students shall have one additional opportunity to improve their scores on each of at least three (3) but no more than five (5) of the total graded qualifying assessments, activities, or assignments which demonstrate knowledge of course content, skills, and standards and count toward a student’s marking period grade.

28. How will my child be graded?
Anne Arundel County Public Schools offers an easy-to-use secure website that allows parents/legal guardians in grades 1 – 12 to engage in their child’s academic success. ParentCONNECTxp supplements, not replaces, existing tools that currently support communication between you, your child’s teacher(s) and the school.
It is the expectation that Teachers are updating grades weekly.

29. Uniform Policy
Pants/Shorts- Khaki tan pants, Capri tan pants, tan “joggers” and tanorts must be worn and appropriately secured around the waist. Shorts must not be any shorter than mid thigh.
Tops- Tops must have collars with buttons (3 or fewer) and be polo style, red for grade 6, navy blue for grade 7, and white for grade 8. Throughout the year building temperatures may fluctuate. It is recommended that students wear layered (any color) shirts underneath their proper uniform colored polos for added comfort.
Students may wear MacArthur Middle School spirit tops any day of the week with appropriate uniform bottoms. Other tops may include correct grade level solid colored sweaters or sweatshirts. “Hoodies” are not permitted. Jackets and coats may not be worn in class and must be kept in your locker. If a sweater or sweatshirt is worn, the grade level polo must be underneath with the collar visible.
Skirts/Skorts/Jumpers- All must be khaki (tan, not denim) worn properly and securely around the waist and may not be any shorter than mid thigh.
Jewelry and Accessories- Necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings are permitted as accessories. Absolutely no bandanas (of any color) or “doo rags” can be worn by students. Any object that can be deemed a distraction to the learning environment is not permitted (this includes slime, fidget spinners, and fidget cubes unless it is written into a students 504 plan or IEP).
Book bags- Only “clear” or “mesh” string bags and/or book bags can be worn by students throughout the school day. All other book bags must be stored in the student locker at the beginning of the school day.
Please remember- Cell phones are not part of the uniform and MUST be stored away at all times. Unfortunately, if a cell phone is lost or stolen, administration cannot guarantee the phone (or any other electronic device) will be located.
*Administration has final say on the appropriateness of how uniforms are worn!
