Her father was a professional dancer, and her mother, a celebrated Portuguese Fado singer who toured throughout Europe. Born in Paris, she split her time between France and Portugal and became fluent in French, Portuguese, Spanish, Latin and finally English. Discovered by French pop singer Sylvie Vartan, Marie’s debut was as a baby actor in Johnson’s Shampoo commercial, and from there became a versatile dancer (including Salsa and Flamenco). She blossomed as a film actress, acting alongside legends like Gerard Depardieu; in “The Convent” (appearing in the Portuguese production under the professional name “Leonora Silveira”) with Catherine Deneuve and John Malkovich. The film won the Palm D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Moving to America she worked on the production side of the Tom Cruise/Penelope Cruz vehicle “Vanilla Sky”. Watching her working on the set, director Cameron Crowe told her, “You belong in front of the camera, not behind it,” and quickly improvised a scene for her so she could obtain her SAG card in America.
