3 Reasons (in general) Raw Materials Markets for Goods
Needed them for their new factories from the industrial revolution…Africa/India/Asia had them Markets for Goods Thought they would be good places to sell their goods from the factories…but not really true Ruined local industries in India Increased power and influence They all wanted more power Also once it began…countries didn’t want to be “the only one without colonies”

4 Reasons (in general) “Civilizing the Savages” & Christianizing them
This contributed to a lot of racism and Social Darwinism. Social Darwinism is what it sounds like. The Euros thought that since they were the most technologically and administratively advanced people they encountered anywhere on the globe and that they were capable of conquering others, they were necessarily fitter than all others and were superior to them. This meant they were doing other peoples a “favor” by colonizing them.

5 Other causes Better European weaponry,
Automatic weapons, The Europeans had them, the colonies didn’t. Automatic machine guns vs muzzle loaders or maybe even less. Telegraphy, steam boats, and trains helped the transfer of goods and aided colonial administration. In Africa, the malarial medicine quinine helped Euros resist the effects of the disease.
