3 RADWG Meeting October 2015 Salvatore Danzeca
RADWG Mandate It provides support to the accelerator sector equipment groups for the assessment of radiation tolerance of electronic equipment to be installed in radiation exposed areas. It is a forum for electronic engineers to discuss design practices radiation tests radiation induced failures in the accelerators. It coordinates radiation test campaigns on electronics inside and outside CERN The RADWG assists the R2E Project leader for the evaluation of the technical aspects of the proposed mitigation actions with the representatives of the equipment groups 25/10/2019 RADWG Meeting October 2015 Salvatore Danzeca

4 RADWG Meeting October 2015 Salvatore Danzeca
Activities: Follow-up on new developments of the equipment groups electronics Inventory of the electronics installed in the tunnel Radiation Testing support Radiation test coordination in the external and internal facilities Facility: PSI proton irradiation from 30 to 200 MeV Co60 gamma irradiation facility at CERN CHARM mixed field irradiation facility at CERN Several other facilities accessible: Neutrons (intermediate and thermal)/heavy ions/xrays.. 25/10/2019 RADWG Meeting October 2015 Salvatore Danzeca

5 Equipment inventory and Radiation Monitoring
Know what there is in the tunnel and in the critical areas Track the failures due to the radiation in the LHC and in the injector (collaboration with the AWG for the use of the AFT tool) Suggest and foresee mitigation actions Radiation testing coordination and supervision Radiation Monitoring Radiation levels in the entire accelerator (LHC and Injector) using RadMon, BLMs and passive dosimeters Radiation levels to foresee the correct mitigation strategies Radiation test requirements based on the measurements and calculation RADWG + Equipment group MCWG + RADWG 25/10/2019 RADWG Meeting October 2015 Salvatore Danzeca

6 New initiatives and developments
RADWG is the interface with all the ATS equipment groups BE-CO in view of the CO3 initiative for the new CERN fieldbus foreseen for the LS3 BE-BI in view of the upgrade of the BPM frontend TE-MPE splice protection system for HL and consolidation of existing hardware TE-VSC in view of the new readout of the pressure sensors BE-RF for the pickup amplifier for the transverse feedback in the PSB TE-CRG in the use of a new architecture for their equipment TE-EPC FGClite production 25/10/2019 RADWG Meeting October 2015 Salvatore Danzeca

7 Radiation Test support and coordination
Users request driven support Evaluate the possible radiation effects With the input of the MCWG decide the target dose/fluences Prepare the test setup Carry out the tests Report the results From >130 components tested FPGAs ADCs Mosfets DAC Transceiver Etc.. 2015: 42 components tested 2016: 52 components to be tested 18 already tested All the reports are available on the EDMS: 8 PSI test slots in the 2016 (5 available) 25/10/2019 RADWG Meeting October 2015 Salvatore Danzeca

8 RHA guidelines for new developments
Time Phase 0 Functional Description/Blocks Phase 1 Radiation Environment Phase 2 System/Components Description Phases Phase 3 Radiation tests - Commercial Off the shelf components test Phase 4 System radiation test Final Summary Installation Approval Phase 5 Phase 6 Operation Follow up Follow-up action of the 227th LMC Meeting A document has to keep track of all the phases and the results Proposal: A part in the ECR should be added to keep into account the RHA approval 25/10/2019 RADWG Meeting October 2015 Salvatore Danzeca

9 RADWG Meeting October 2015 Salvatore Danzeca
Thank you 25/10/2019 RADWG Meeting October 2015 Salvatore Danzeca
