Water on and around the Earth
Topics Covered Water in various forms Water on and around the Earth
3
Pure water is clear. It has no scent.
4
Water changes to ice when cooled to 32˚F.
Water as a solid… Water changes to ice when cooled to 32˚F. Examples of water in solid form are ice, snow and frost. QUESTION: What are some other examples of water in solid form? ANSWER: Other examples of water in solid form are glaciers, ice cubes, icicles, ice on a skating rink.
5
Water as a liquid… There are two kinds of water: salt water and fresh water. Only fresh water can be applied as drinking water. 70% of the Earth is covered by water in its liquid form as oceans, lakes, streams, and rivers. There are two types of water; salt water and fresh water. Salt water like its name implies contains salt. As humans we can not drink this type of water because the salt in the water will dehydrate us. The majority of the water on earth is salt water. Only 1% of the water on earth is fresh water or available for drinking .
6
Water changes to an invisible gas (vapor) when heated to 212˚F.
Water as a gas… Water changes to an invisible gas (vapor) when heated to 212˚F. Water vapor is the gas phase of water. Water vapor can be produced from the evaporation of liquid water, snow, or ice.
7
The atmosphere is full of water.
There is always water in the atmosphere. When water vapor condenses clouds form. Clouds are the most visible manifestation of atmospheric water, but even clear air contains water—water in particles that are too small to be seen. The atmosphere is the superhighway used to move water around the Earth. This photo is taken from a plane, above the clouds.
8
The ocean is a storehouse of water.
The oceans are storehouses for the vast majority of all water on Earth. As water changes from a solid to a liquid to a gas it is moving around the earth through a process known as the Water Cycle. (Students will learn more about this in the next part of this lesson.)

The End QUESTION: What are the three forms or states of water?
ANSWER: Solid, Liquid and Gas QUESTION: What is an example of water as a solid, a liquid and a gas? ANSWER: Solid- snow, ice or frost Liquid- ocean water or rain Gas- water vapor
