3 How to Engage with the Academic Environment!
Watch this video for tips on how to be more effectively engaged in the academic environment.  *play video* The main message is the importance of the syllabus. Reiterate to students the importance of reviewing their syllabi. All professors are required to share a syllabus, which is a contract between you and your professor. Everything you need to know about your course and how to be successful in it will be found on the syllabus.

4 A Message from your Academic Advisors!
Now a game to demonstrate an important message from your academic advisors. A Message from your Academic Advisors!

5 Telephone Message from Your Academic Advisors
Ask students to sit/stand or in a circle/straight line. They need to be close enough that whispering is possible, but not so close that players can hear each other whisper. You will be the first person in the line or circle to whisper the phrase into the ear of the person sitting or standing to your right. The phrase should only be whispered once. The Phrase:  Including your student id (aka A number) in s to your advisor is important to ensure you get the quickest and most up-to-date information about your graduation plan. The Game Continues. Players whisper the phrase to their neighbors until it reaches the last player in line. The last player says the phrase out loud so everyone can hear how much it has changed from the first whisper at the beginning of the circle or line. Compare the final phrase with the original phrase. Reiterate to students that meeting with academic advisors is a key to success. Often messages are disrupted when heard from other students and sometimes even faculty make mistakes about graduation plans.

6 Engagement Tips from your Academic Advisors
Including your student id (aka A-number) in s to your advisor is important to ensure you get the quickest and most up-to-date information about your graduation plan. Send professional s from your Islander account to communicate effectively. The ratio of students to advisors is much different than high school so PLAN AHEAD to schedule meetings. Students are responsible for registering for courses. Plan to meet with your advisor before and after schedules are published. Use Degree Planner regularly. When changing a major, contact and meet with an advisor from your new major. Engagement Tips from your Academic Advisors [Read the bullets as they appear on the slideshow]

7 Getting Involved on Campus
This next section will explore how to become socially engaged on your campus. Our main goal for you is for you to learn to be connected to the University and really make the Island feel like your home. One way to do this is to be actively involved on campus. Some believe that in order be classified as involved on campus that you have to hold a leadership position or join every student organization. However, involvement looks different for every student and helps create a truly unique experience for you!

8 We asked students who are involved in various organizations why they got involved and advice they have for you all as first year Islanders. *play video*

16 Connecting with your Peers!
Now we will begin an activity intended for you to make connections with your First-Year Seminar peers! Connecting with your Peers!

17 Line Up By Birthday! Have students line up in order of their birthday (not year, but month and date).  Number off into groups of three. Put students in groups of four rather than in two. Ask students to return to their seats. Ask students to shift their phones to airplane mode. No LTE or 5G in the middle of the Gulf!! (They may need their phone calculators for scoring).

18 Lost at Sea Scenario You and a group of 2-3 of your newest TAMU-CC friends have chartered a yacht across the Gulf of Mexico during Spring Break Because none of you have any previous sailing experience, you have hired an experienced skipper and two-person crew. Unfortunately, in the middle of the gulf a fire breaks out in the ships’ galley and the skipper and crew have been lost whilst trying to fight the blaze. Much of the yacht is destroyed and is slowly sinking. Luckily, you and your new friends escape by successfully employing a rubber life craft. Your location is still unclear because vital navigational and radio equipment have been damaged in the fire. Your best estimate is that you are deserted hundreds of miles from nearest landfall. You and your new friends have managed to recover 15 items, undamaged and intact after the boat crash. In addition, you have salvaged a box of matches. Your task is to rank the 15 items in terms of their importance for you, as you wait to be rescued. Place the number 1 by the most important item, the number 2 by the second most important and so forth until you have ranked all 15 items. Read the Lost at Sea Scenario Provide a ‘lost on the island ranking chart’ for every member of each group. Advance to the next slide for individual and group ranking timers.

19 Individual Student Rankings
First, ask students to INDIVIDUALLY take 5 minutes to decide their own rankings, and record the choices in the left-hand Step 1 column. Discourage chatter or discussion for this phase. If students seem to be finished with their rankings before 5 minutes have passed, advance to the next slide and begin the group rankings.

20 Team Rankings After five minutes are up, invite everyone to discuss in their teams. Encourage the group to discuss their individual choices and work together to agree on a collaborative list. Allow 10 minutes for this section. Ask students to record the group rankings in the second column (team rankings). Encourage chatter and discussion! If groups seem to be finished before the 10 minutes have passed, advance to the next slide to begin reviewing the official COAST GUARD rankings.
