1 STRAIGHT CATHETERIZATION PROTOCOL
DID NOT VOID 6 HRS AFTER REMOVAL OF INDWELLING URINARY CATHETER (IUC) BLADDER SCAN #1 ≤ 300 mL > 300 mL Notify provider Obtain order for straight cath and document output* Reassess in 6 hrs Can patient void? yes yes Ask patient to void Can patient void? no no POST VOID BLADDER SCAN BLADDER SCAN #2 Notify provider Reassess in 2 hrs ≤ 300 mL Notify provider of results Continue to monitor for s/sx of urinary retention Discomfort or feeling of bladder fullness even after voiding Abdominal pain Distended bladder Frequent voiding of small amounts mL Obtain order for straight cath every 6 hrs until bladder function returns Consider IUC only if patient can’t tolerate or if with urethral trauma Consider etiology of retention and/or urology consult >500mL Obtain order for Straight cath every 4 hours (6x/day) and if volume remains >500 ml OR If patient is agitated Or cant tolerate, place IUC *A big difference in scanned volume vs catheterized amount may indicate ascites vs retained urine 10/13/2019
