5 A Play-Based Curriculum
Learn through experiences Apply learning to own life Have fun!

6 Maths Counting and ordering numbers, starting to add and subtract and use our skills in the real world. We measure lots of different things and explore patterns and shapes. We start to use the language of Maths! Using resources to help us count. Matching numbers to amounts Using money through play Recognising numbers and Number formation

7 Numbers in the environment – ‘This looks like number 1!’
Singing number songs Making patterns Using ‘maths language’ (longer/ shorter, heavy/ light)

8 Literacy We have phonics every day and learn 4 new sounds a week with the correct letter formation. We practise the sounds we have learnt though play based activities. Puzzles to help recognise letters Enjoying sharing stories Practising our own names Mark making through role play

9 Practising mark making in different ways
Starting to hear the initial sound Speaking clearly and listening to others

10 Introducing Reading Books
Dandelion Books – Stories reinforcing the sounds your child already knows. Sounding out – Phonetically sounding out each letter of a word (without a schwa) Blending – Saying the sounds slowly ‘blending’ them together to hear a word. Red Words – Words which cannot be sounded out e.g. the, I, there, was

11 Sam sat on the mat.

12 We will be introducing new Dandelion Books weekly as we learn new sounds.
It is recommended to read these books several times to embed the new sounds and practise blending. We will help your child change these books regularly. Reading diaries will be collected every Thursday. Things to bare in mind when reading at home: The font - some fonts form letters in different ways which may confuse your child. You may just need to explain that it is still the same sound. Sounds they may not know yet - some early reading books will have sounds your child may not know yet. Just be aware they may need extra encouragement and support to enjoy/ successfully read them.

13 Tapestry Learning Journals
You may be familiar with these from Pre-school or Nursery. We use Tapestry as a way to document the children’s learning throughout the year. These work best when used at home and at school, you cad add your own observations of the things that your child has done and we will share them in school. At the end of the year we will download their Learning Journal and can copy it to your or USB stick or CD.
