1 Fred Hollows The Foundation and the Man

2 Who is Fred Hollows the man?
Find out about Fred Note to teacher: The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ operates in the Pacific and Papua New Guinea. The Fred Hollows Foundation whose HQ is in Australia operates in the rest of the world.

3 5 questions Watch the 4-minute video about Fred Hollows.
Write 5 questions based on the information you have seen. Keep a note of the answers! Swap your questions with your partner and answer their 5 questions. Mark each other’s work once completed.

4 Recap - Fred and Gabi In the early 1970s Gabi and Fred worked together on the Eye Health Programme in Australia that you just heard about in the video. The project sparked the start of their relationship and they got married and had 7 children.

5 How The Foundation began
Just before Fred died, he and Gabi started The Fred Hollows Foundation (also known as The Foundation) to keep Fred’s dream alive. Today Fred’s vision is The Foundation’s mission: A world where no one is needlessly blind.

6 The beginning of The Foundation in NZ
In 1993, The Fred Hollows Foundation opened an office in New Zealand. In the early days they raised money to support the intraocular lens factories in Eritrea and Nepal. Since 2002 The Foundation has been operating in the Pacific Islands and Papua New Guinea.

7 Fred Hollows & Social Action
Research activity – go to Fred Hollows website and then answer these questions: What influenced Fred Hollows to help people? Why did Fred advocate for indigenous people in Australia? How did Fred make a difference in Australia? Why was his social action work important? What was sustainable about his work? Notes for teacher: Work in groups and give answers in a class discussion. Teacher can watch the interview with Fred Hollows and Paul Holmes to help students answer the questions

8 The Foundation in NZ Notes for teacher:
Teacher to ask students if they have ever been on holiday to any of these islands. Teacher to explain how close these islands are to New Zealand. The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ ais helping our Pacific neighbours.

9 What does The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ do?
Eye conditions like cataract and diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness even though they're treatable or preventable. The Foundation works to make sure everyone has access to quality eye care and to end avoidable blindness. How do The Foundation do this?

10 Restoring sight through operations, treatment and education
The Foundation raises money to pay for everything needed to treat patients. Notes for teacher: Teacher to discuss with students what might be needed to treat a patient – some answers: Hospital – eye care unit Surgical equipment Medicine Staff

11 Training local doctors and nurses
By training local doctors and nurses the work of The Foundation is sustainable. Discuss why. Notes for teacher: Teacher to discuss with students how this is sustainable - some answers: The Foundation work with local governments to set up eye clinics and train local healthcare specialists. This model of ‘teaching a man to fish’ was one of Fred Hollows’ beliefs and it works. No one needs to wait for doctors from developing countries to arrive and help, now local people can help their own communities. The Foundation employ workers who go into the Community and talk about eye health, encouraging people to attend a clinic, dispelling any fears or superstition around treatment.

12 Training, research & innovation
The Foundation’s Mobile Eye Clinic is a great example of innovation at its best! Traveling to remote parts of Fiji, The Foundation brings a fully-equipped team in this mobile clinic to restore sight to local people. Notes to teacher: Teacher to discuss with students how important the mobile eye clinic is for those patients who are too poor, or unwell to travel to the main Pacific Eye Institute – some answers: Some patients will never have the opportunity to travel to the Hospital due to lack of money / lack of people to accompany them / too restricted by their eye condition. The Foundation send Screening Nurses into communities ahead of the Outreach Team who travel with the Mobile Eye Clinic. These nurses assess patients and have them ready to receive the treatment when the clinic arrives. This makes the most of the time and resources and ensures that the MEC can treat as many patients as possible.

13 Design your own eye clinic
What equipment and resources do you need to run an eye clinic? How will you fund your clinic? What operations and services will you offer? How long do the operations last? How can you promote your clinic to local people who live in isolated areas? How would you persuade patients to put their fears of western medicine aside to agree to come to a clinic? Notes for teacher: Teacher to ask students to get into pairs and create their own eye clinic in a developing country. They need to discuss and plan how they would promote their services to local people.
