Flexible Access to Remote Desktop Server
HOBLink JWT Flexible Access to Remote Desktop Server HOB has experience in java programming since J-Term had been the 99th product that has been certified with 100% Java by SUN. HOB has development experience in the mainframe area for more than 20 years. This experiences is also transferrend to the development within the Windows Terminal Server area.
2
HOBLink JWT What is it ?
3
HOBLink JWT Overview Need for effective business processes and protection of company knowledge Central storage of company data and applications is important (e.g., for cloud computing or mobile workplaces) Secure and flexible access to these resources must be assured Innovative RDP-Client for flexible access to Remote Desktop Server Remote Desktop Server = formerly Windows Terminal Server
4
HOBLink JWT The Idea Easy and fast access to centrally installed Windows applications from any client, independently of the operating system (Windows Anywhere) Existing hardware can be used longer = investment protection Simplification of user management via central administration Support-friendly due to the central installation Reduces TCO thanks to the Web-based architecture The reason for developing JWT. Very generally spoken. How the idea has been realized is shown on the following slides. TCO= Total Cost of Ownership
5
HOBLink JWT Areas of Application
Using HOBLink JWT is very individual and variable Easy to integrate into existing infrastructure Compatible to third party environments Simple and fast adaption to changed needs in the future Whenever you need remote access to Remote Desktop Server, VDI or desktop system via RDP
6
HOBLink JWT Further Aspects
Optionally, even Macs or Linux/Unix interfaces can be accessed Simply use a java-capable platform Works even if the target PC is turned off (Wake-on-LAN) Save energy costs Green IT
7
HOBLink JWT Connection Targets
Remote Desktop Server (Windows Terminal Server) Windows XP/Vista/Win 7 (not Home Edition) Virtual Desktops Win XP/Vista/Win 7 With HOB MacGate also Mac OS X With HOB X11Gate also Unix/Linux
8
HOBLink JWT Installation & Administration
Central One-time installation on the Web server Access from the client just with a browser Applet download (under 1.5 MB) Supports Java Web Start The application has high stability Local on each client Installation on webserver, only: time/effort savings for the admin Applet size with pack 200 is about 477kb (but webserver needs to support pack 200, evtl. only with additional software) Java webstart: Applet is saved to the client and need not to be reloaded with every new start Browser can be closed Time/effort saving for the administrator: Clients need not be maintained/administered Simple roll-out Fast and easy updates
9
HOBLink JWT User Access
Left side:User view: selection of servers the user can chose to connect to; if the user is allowed, he can also configure the connections from here. Right side: Access via Browser User: Select pre-configured servers to connect to (local installation) User: Access via Browser (central installation)

11
HOBLink JWT Features & Functions
12
HOBLink JWT Load Balancing
Server farm management and an even load distribution When establishing a connection the client sends a UDP packet to the Terminal Server and receives the current server load No Single-Point-of-Failure Reconnection to a disconnected session Perfect server load Prevents overload of single servers Performance enhancement due to evenly distribution of load Increased comfort for the user The HOB Load Balancing Module measures the processor load: Installation as a service on the terminal servers Administration within the Microsoft management console Load factor is an average value of already sent request, not a snapshot Standard load balancing is included in the product, enhanced load balancing can be purchased as an optional feature
13
HOBLink JWT Load Balancing
Broadcast: Client sends a request to all Remote Desktop Servers in the network Enhanced Load Balancing only available with HOB RD ES as an optional component Server List: Configuration of specified Remote Desktop Server
14
HOBLink JWT Disconnect & Reconnect to a Session
Disconnected Session: The disconnected session is shown in the server list. The user can reconnect to this session. Data that have not been saved are kept. If the session is disconnected (not logged off), the session can be re-connected from any client. Data that have not been saved are kept. One can see a screenshot of a disconnected session if load balancing is used. The user may have several disconnected sessions, too.
15
HOBLink JWT Application Serving
Automatic execution of an application as soon as user has logged on Not the whole Windows desktop available No irritations on user side!
16
HOBLink JWT Application Serving
“Application Serving,” i.e., during log on a specific application is started for the corresponding client Configuration at the client Alternative: Start the client session with the desktop
17
HOBLink JWT Flexible Printing Options
Various printing options Universal printer support Options available: Local print (printing on a local or network printer via a driver at the remote desktop session host) Easy Print (printing on a local printer with local driver without installing driver on the server, too) less administration effort LPR/LPD print IP Print (print to an IP-Port of the network printer) With Windows, even an automatic printer mapping is possible Printing on a local or network printer No double installation of drivers on client side and server
18
HOBLink JWT Printer Support
Automatic Printer Configuration: In addition to manually setting up printers, locally installed printers on Windows platforms can be detected and automatically created Manual Printer Configuration: Further option to configure printers
19
HOBLink JWT EasyPrint Less administration effort High stability
Less administration effort High stability Up to 600 dpi Remote Desktop Server printer drivers HP Deskjet 1100 C on RDS allows for printing on a locally connected printer without installing the respective driver on the remote desktop servers pre-installed HP driver when installing Windows at the RDS no compatibility problems with printer drivers, drivers must have the same name at the client and the server higher stability of remote desktop services since fewer drivers needs to be installed print quality up to 600 dpi PCL printing Mit ETS 2.2: Universal Druckertreiber von HOB besonders an EasyPrint angepasst Installed printer driver on the client is used
20
HOBLink JWT Java Web Start
Java Webstart Technology Oracle First time HOBLink JWT is used HOBLink JWT applet is downloaded from the webserver and stored in the user´s local cache Next times HOBLink JWT is used Every other time you use HOBLink JWT, applet is executed from the user´s local cache Perfect for low bandwidth!
