Write chemical formulas for the following Ionic Compounds:
BELLWORK 11/23/15 Write chemical formulas for the following Ionic Compounds: Iron (II) oxide Sodium sulfide Copper (I) nitride
2
3 TYPES OF IONIC COMPOUNDS
Metal + Non -Metal Ex: NaCl Transitional Metal + Non-Metal Ex: Cu (II) chloride CuCl2 Metal + Polyatomic Ion Ex: Na2SO4 •
3
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
Binary means a compound formed between two elements.
4
Ex: BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
NaBr MgF2 Sodium Bromide Magnesium Fluoride
5
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
Potassium Chloride Aluminum Oxide • notice ending of name is ide! K+Cl- -> KCl Al23+O32- -> Al2O3
6
Writing Formulas with Transition Metals
FeCl3 FeCl2 Iron (III) Chloride Iron (II) Chloride
7
TERNARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
Ternary means a compound formed between 3 different elements. These compounds usually contain Poly-atomic Ions
8
Polyatomic Ions Definition •tightly bound groups of atoms that behave as a unit and carry a negative charge. Exception: NH4+ Example SO32-, NO2-, ClO2-
9
Ternary Ionic Compounds:Writing Formulas
Ca2+(CO3)2- CaCO3
10
Write the formulas for these
Lithium sulfide tin (II) oxide tin (IV) oxide Magnesium fluoride Copper (II) sulfate Iron (III) phosphide gallium nitrate Iron (III) sulfide
11
Write the formulas for these
Ammonium chloride ammonium sulfide barium nitrate
12
Things to look for If cations have (), they are transitional metals. If anions end in -ide they are probably off the periodic table (Monoatomic) If anion ends in -ate or -ite it is polyatomic
