3 Non-medical BAN Traffic
Type of service Type of traffic Description Real-time service Constant Bit Rate Traffic Interactive Voice, Video and Gaming Stringent QoS Real-time Variable Bit Rate Traffic Compressed Audio and Video Streams Transmission in burst Less stringent QoS than CBR Non-real-time service Unspecified Bit Rate traffic File or text data transfer Similar to non-real-time VBR Best effort service, enjoyed success in LAN Submission Slide 3

4 MAC protocol should: Distinguish and prioritize the traffic based on its real-time requirements - Need of coordinator - Coordinator should have control over the order of transmission Have low-latency characteristics to support real-time behavior - Fixed bandwidth may required for CBR traffic Have contention based access for VBR traffic - Contention between real-time VBR and non-real-time VBR may degrade the performance of real-time VBR - First packet of real-time VBR may contend, have mechanism to reserve channel for other VBR packet in a flow Distinguish and treat differently packets in a real-time VBR flow Maximize utilization of the medium - No idle channel Energy consumption is critical for BAN nodes used for motion/posture detection Submission Slide 4
