3 Introduction Progress monitoring assessment
Progress monitoring assessment is a practice of gathering information about the learners performance(NAEYC, 2005;ECE Policy, 2001) Importance of progress monitoring assessment Progress monitoring assessment provides appropriate feed back in the teaching and learning process Evaluate the teaching and leaning process Asses student academic progress (Dumphy, 2008; MacMillan, 2014,Fuchs & Fuchs, 2002).

No common assessment in public preschools/ no set standards Preschoolers are tested as the primary school learners Preschool teachers tend to follow assessment carried out/preferred in primary schools This implies that preschool teachers lack knowledge on progress monitoring assessment

It is a vitality to the academic progression of children and provides feedback to the next level Neglecting this subject will jeopardise children’s learning

9 Recommendations Early childhood institutions to incorporate the subject of progress monitoring assessment In-service training needed Common assessment tools to be developed Progress monitoring assessment to be used during teaching practice.
