Voter Registration Guide

2. Who is eligible to register to vote?
A citizen of the United States
A resident of California
18 years old on or before the next election day
You may register while you are 17, provided you will be 18 on or before election day.
Not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction

3. Who should complete a voter registration card?
Anyone who has never registered to vote
Has changed their place of residence since last registering
Wishes to change their political party affiliation
Has changed their name since last registering

4. How to use a voter registration card
Boxes 1-2
Print the voter’s legal name
Boxes 4-5
Voter’s address and city where the voter resides.

Have them check off appropriate box

5. Give exact description of where the voter lives.

Include cross streets,
bridges, route or other
landmarks. The voter must
have a mailing address in

they MUST list the number.
If the voter does not have either,
they MUST list the last 4 digits
of their Social Security Number.

8. The voter registering may choose to

mark a party listed, however, they DO NOT have to choose any of the parties listed.
If the voter wishes to NOT to be
affiliated with a party, check the box
marked “NO”. If “Other” is marked, the voter fills in the name of the party desired.
YOU CANNOT TELL PEOPLE WHAT PARTY TO REGISTER FOR!! VOTER REGISTERATION IS NON-PARTISAN!
NOTE: There can be only ONE mark in Box 14 with NO CORRECTIONS or
ALTERATIONS. A new card must be filled out if an error is made.

10. Signature of voter registering This box MUST contain the
signature of the voter. Please
include the date of signing.
You must sign this to say that you are turning in their voter registration form for them.

11. The bottom portion of voter registration cards
The portion below the perforation line is to be given to the voter. The person assisting with the registration card or the person keeping the voter registration card to mail in for the voter, must compete the area on either of the voter registration cards with this required information.

12. What to do with completed voter registration cards!
Completed Voter Registration Cards may be:
Delivered to the local election office
Delivered to the Secretary of State’s office
Mailed- Voter Registration Cards are postage paid
DO NOT HOLD ON TO COMPLETED CARDS
Deliver or mail them to the Registrar of Voters within 3 days of receiving them, or the close of registration, whichever comes first.
To be eligible to vote in an election the registration card must be delivered to the Elections Office on or before the 15-day close or registration.

13. Absentee ballot
If they are re-registering or newly registered they can initial Box 15
It they are already registered they can fill out an application and check to be permanent absentee voter.
You may also write a letter to request absentee status.

14. Additional information
Ask people to use BLACK or DARK BLUE ink when completing a card.

Register nonexistent person
Alter party affiliation
Take or give out personal information put on the registration card.
