Presentation on theme: "Brainstorm: what makes events from the past historically significant?"— Presentation transcript:

1 Brainstorm: what makes events from the past historically significant?
Brainstorm criteria for assessing historical significance

2 Comparing and assessing historical significance
The Richter Scale: measures the intensity of earthquakes. The lower on the scale the less significant the quake. You can use a Richter Scale to explain your understanding of degrees of historical significance as well.

3 Lecture: what does the richter scale measure and how does it work?

4 Your brainstorm results
Did you include the following criteria?

5 Scale of the event: How big was it?
Prominence at the time: Was it noticed at the time as having importance? Scale of the event: How big was it? Consequences: What effect did the event have? Magnitude of impact: How deeply felt or profound was its impact? Scope of impact: How widespread was its impact? Duration of impact: How long-lasting were the effects? Revealing of the times: Does it inform our understanding of the period? Being first

6 Applying the concept Use the information that you gathered by answering the questions last day to plot the event of the American Revolution on the timeline provided. Use the X axis to plot each event and rate its historical significance using the Richter scale. For each event, explain why you rated it as you did (you might want to just list this on the back of the sheet or you can explain it briefly under each event on the timeline itself).
