EARTHQUAKES
3
What is an Earthquake An earthquake is what happens when two tectonic plates suddenly slip past one another.
4
Parts of an Earthquake Hanging Wall Foot Wall Hanging Wall = The higher of the two tectonic plates Foot Wall = The lower of the two tectonic plates Fault line = where the two moving plates meet
5
3 Types of Faults 1. Normal Fault The Hanging wall moves down and the falling wall moves up
6
Types of Faults 2. Reverse Fault The Hanging wall moves up and the falling wall moves down
7
3 Types of Faults Strike – Slip Fault The two walls move across each other.
8
After Shock After shock is quake of lesser magnitude, usually one of a series, following a large earthquake.
9
Magnitude The Richter Scale (1-8) Developed by Charles Richter in 1935 – 1 Usually not Felt – 2 Felt by few – 3 Feels like a passing vehicle – 4 Felt by most, walls crack – 5 Felt by all, furniture moves – 6 Moderate Damage, walls collapse – 7 Major damage, foundations shift – 8 All structures fall
