2 Aims for this session: Group presentation and discussion (group 3)
Jigsaw Reading Task Continue Working as Groups on Assessment 1

3 Q What do you think jigsaw reading refers to?
2 4 3 1

4 “The jigsaw learning method is a cooperative learning technique designed to engage students by making them responsible for peer and self-learning. In this method, students are divided into groups based on different concepts, where they become “experts” of their given concept by a pre-assigned reading.. Once an understanding of the concept is reached, […] each member teaches their assigned concept to the other students, therefore allowing peer teaching” Wilson at. al. (2017 :1152)

5 Jigsaw Reading An effective reading strategy that relies upon team effort A larger text is split up and each member of the team will read the section(s) assigned to them. Following an individual reading, each member will summarise their section to the group. In this way, having shared their knowledge with others, each member of the group also learns about what is in the other sections of the text thereby adding to their own knowledge. Through further discussion the group can begin to respond critically to the text.

6 Jigsaw Reading Task You are about to apply the jigsaw reading method to the following journal article: Leitch, S., and Merlot, E. (2017) ‘Power relations within brand management: the challenge of social media’ Journal of Brand Management 25: 85–92 You should begin by getting into groups of 4 people

7 Jigsaw Reading Task STEP 1: In your group study the title and subheadings of the article. What clues do they reveal in terms of what the article is likely to cover? STEP 2: Decide which group member will focus on the following sections of the article: Person 1: Introduction and Power Relations Person 2: Social Media as a Disruptive Force and Relationships Person 3: Social Practices and Power/Knowledge Person 4: Resistance and Discussion and Conclusion

8 Jigsaw Reading Task STEP 3: individually, begin reading the two sections of the article that have been assigned to you. As you do so, make notes on: A) use of key terminology and its meaning B) the main ideas conveyed by the authors C) the evidence offered to support each of these ideas STEP 4: Once you have completed your reading Person 1 from each group should come together to discuss their notes and understanding of the assigned sections. Person 2 should do the same, as should Person 3 and Person 4 in their new groups.

9 Jigsaw Reading Task STEP 5: Now return to your original group so that you can each share your reading and understanding of the assigned sections. Person 1 will go first followed by person 2, person 3, and finally person 4. STEP 6: Having learnt new knowledge from each other and also having shared your own perspectives, now discuss whether you agree with the main argument(s) put forward by the authors of this article. Remember, for each point that you make you must also justify it (meaning you will tell your group why you stand by your statement and what evidence you can offer to support it).

10 You should now continue working on Assessment 1.
Please, form your groups for this task.
